I have 9 magpie ducks, hatched last summer, just started laying eggs a few weeks ago. One has been having issues for a week plus now. She’s having trouble walking. When she walks it’s slow and she has a see saw motion to her gait. She’ll be walking and then her legs go out behind her so she’s laying on her belly, she then tries to get up and really cant. Her wings go out and she tries to use them to push herself up and crawl. I’ve noticed it’s the one leg more than the other and she’ll be walking and the foot curls under and she falls. She’s eating some and drinking normally.
she has no other obvious symptoms excluding she’s thin. No discharge, no sneezing, coughing, runny eyes. She’s still in high spirits and loud, she just can’t walk. Also none of the other ducks are having issues. I don’t believe she was injured and I can’t imagine she could have gotten into something bad as the others should have as well? Also no issues with the actual legs or feet, no sores bumble, tears, cuts, legs look normal, and she can move all her toes and fold them and what not, nothing appears broken or out of place
I’ve given niacin, and dewormed since she was thin. They eat layer crumbles have access to scratch grains, grit, and oyster shell. The other ducks are in good weight, and they’re kept in clean housing but it’s spring so there’s mud and water around. But we do not use chemicals or poisons or anything like that on our property.
Any ideas?
as a weird additional note I’ve had an issue over the past 15 years with ducks, at least 3 times, different ducks, different areas, different years, in the spring too but it has only been older baby ducks, where they go lame, stop being able to walk, get weak, and die. And it was always one after the other I’d loose 3-7 then it would stop and all the remaining birds were fine and healthy the rest of their lives. No one was ever able to figure it out. But this is somewhat similar but also different, but she’s also not a baby so I’m wondering if this is the same thing just effecting an adult, and if so what am I dealing with.
I also had one blind duck in the past and I’m not sure if he was always blind or something caused him to go blind. The whole thing has me a little freaked out that I have a disease here or something wrong with the soil or water doing this to the ducks.
I have other species of birds with no issues on the same property.
