We had a hen die today and another hen is sick. I am fairly certain it’s not the same illness. So here are her symptoms. She is not laying eggs, no lice or mites, just standing at one spot the entire day (in front of waterer), and has a sack filled with water. I massaged her crop to see the texture. It was watery and balloon like. When I was massaging, water came out of her beak. It smells really like old fermented feed. It had little to no food in it, it was a yellow liquid, light yellow, not dark. Almost resembles orange juice dilated in water by 3x times. Smells sour. Is this sour crop? @Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock

It does sound like she may have early sour crop. Crop problems accompany reproductive disorders in hens over two, and they can also have other problems. Here are some articles about crop problems that are helpful:

She is under 2 years of age. From the article, it seems she has sour crop, would it be possible to treat without drugs?

From reading the second article. What I take from it is:

Feed only chicken feed dampened in water and electrolytes in water. I quickly scanned through it. So do I need to withhold food at all?

I would withhold feed with an impacted crop, but with a sour crop I would feed mushy feed with a lot of water, and give something for a fungal infection. I am not a good authority on crop problems. Mine who had them did not survive because they were due to a reproductive issue or something else. Azygous and Two Crows are better with recommendations.

@azygous @TwoCrows Thanks for your help though!

You can give dampened feed, but both articles recommend treating with an anti-yeast/fungal medication. Monistat (Miconazole) or Clotrimazole would be what you would want to use if possible. You can use store brand.

Does the number matter?

You want the seven day yeast cream. Treat twice a day for seven full days. If no improvement by day three, increase the dosage to three times a day. Use half an inch to one inch of cream.
Thanks! I will try to get it. Hope she ends on a good note.
