Hi everyone. I have a sick hen and no idea what it could be. As of about 30 minutes ago my husband and I are scared she may have salmonellosis. Here is some background info that may be important- she is about 1 1/2 yrs old, a silver laced Wyandotte. We have 13 chickens total, 2 are roosters. We also have 4 ducks. All are housed together. This hen, her name is The Undertaker, seemed mopey the other day and I noticed she had white runny poop. I kept my eye on her and then I picked her up the next day and realized she is skin and bones. I immediately took her away from the coop. She’s isolated in a dog kennel. She is barely eating or drinking. I soaked her in an epsom salt bath to relax her and then blow dried her. I noticed a small scab on the bottom of her foot. We assumed it was bumblefoot and we removed the scab and the contents inside. She has a large bump on her webbing between her toes on that foot but it hasn’t ruptured and doesn’t seem to hurt her. So we got everything to treat bumblefoot. Well then we noticed one of her eyes is closed and she won’t open it. So we started flushing it with saline. We purchased vetrx and have been using that, it actually seems to help the eye. We used it for the first time last night and today she had the eye open about 1/4. We are still cleaning her foot also. We keep looking up symptoms and it seems every chicken illness has the same symptoms. We do not know of an avian vet in our area. I thought about maybe calling the bird sanctuary that is in another town. We got her to eat some feed tonight but only if we break it into tiny pieces. Tomorrow we are going to get her some crumbled feed. It’s like we think we know what’s going on and then another symptom emerges or goes wrong. I’m sorry if this is confusing and jumbled. Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you so much!!!

How does her crop feel? What do you feed them? Vetrx is just Vicks vapor rub for chickens, it won't do anything for this.
Has she laid before and have you felt for an egg? Is she a low ranking chicken and being prevented from eating?

Please post photos of the hen, her poop, her eye, the feet, etc.
Thank you.

I agree, I'd check her crop.
Does she have lice/mites?
When was her last egg?
Any moldy feed?

Work on hydration, then see if she will eat.

Honestly I can’t tell where he crop is cause I think it’s empty from not eating. We feed them Dumor egg layer mixed with feather fixer. We tried the vetrx because of her eye being closed, the internet said it could be a respiratory thing. She is a laying hen, I have not felt for an egg. She is at the top of the pecking order so when she started acting sick I noticed right away.

hi everyone, I took her to a vet today and had to euthanize her. I then took her to msu for a necropsy and will get the results in a few days. Hoping I can avoid this in the future. Thank you for your help.

Hi again, I wanted to update that the testing did find she had mareks disease. Hopefully this thread can help anyone with this issue in the future.
