Our peahen at a small
Sanctuary where I volunteer , started acting sick on Saturday .
Last night I collected what she pooped out while on her perch and it looks just like egg yolk with small amount of blood in it..it's very mucuousy and yellowish ..exactly like egg yolk . I put what I could in a plastic bag to bring to exotics vet for testing this am ..

Starting on Saturday, she was sleeping a lot, had her head tucked under her wing, wasn't interested in her favorite treats and wings were drooped down. She's usually very friendly and nosey ..will run up to us and seek out treats or just to see what's going on so her off behavior was noticed right away.

Our vet who makes barn calls is excellent with chickens - she's had her own for 20+ years -but admittedly not experienced with peafowl but I called her right away..she did a basic exam ..eyes and nares are clear no signs of any respiratory issues; she palpated her but didn't feel any eggs (she normally doesn't lay this time of year but we did find an egg about 4 -5 weeks ago which was unusual ..usually stops laying end of summer )

I also called someone at the peafowl association and was told to deworm her (admittedly we don't normally deworm them unless we see a problem )

We gave her 1ml of albendazole and started her on oral Baytril . And vet gave her a shot of B12 .

Yesterday she was better than Saturday but def still not herself and acting sick . She ate a small
Amount of scrambled eggs but not much else when offered ..went up to her feeder but while I was there , didn't eat. I did see her go over and drink water . She also was scratching and pecking around at the ground in her run and I saw her pluck and sat a few pieces of grass .
Her wings weren't as dropped as they were on Saturday and she was more active but not eating normally and was still periodically closing her eyes while standing and sometimes tucking her head under her wing .

Attached is the substance I found under her perch ..it landed on a wood beam below her so I was able to scrape some up..i also saw her drop some directly in front of me but it landed on the pine shavings on the ground and is harder to decipher in the pic ..I've included both pics .. the one of the plastic bag is what I scraped up from
The wood beam which had old poop on it and which I tried to avoid including on the sample.
The other pic is mostly pine shavings but if you look closely you can see the mucous /stringy texture of what she passed and u can see a tiny spot of blood .

I'm calling the exotics/avian vet where we will take chickens for X-rays and other more involved treatment than our vet who makes barn calls can do on site ..they will
Not treat peafowl despite being avian vets and they don't make barn calls ..I don't think I would attempt to transport her there either way as I think the stress would be too much ..but I am calling them to see if I can drop a sample of the egg yolk looking poop for analysis .

I texted the pics of the poop to Our vet who examined her and she wondered if she has internally laid an egg..

I'm very worried..any shared experiences or other insights would
Be appreciated .

One more pic ..again, I had to pick this sample up with the pine shavings if landed on but you can get a good idea of the texture and you can see the blood in this pic .
Also included a pic I took of Nina and her friend Cheech , yesterday.

I would ask the vet about adding metronidazole (for blackhead) and Baycox or Marquis (for coccida) to treatment. If she were mine I would treat her for blackhead, E.coli, worms, and coccidian. I would also ask the vet about giving her subcutaneous fluids and tube feeding.
