Hey all! Check out these two pics of my peahen (her name is Busby)! At the advise of a peafowl breeder, I've been treating her with Baytril Injections once per day for five days. Tonight (Friday 1/9/2015) will be her fifth day & she doesn't appear to be getting any better (if she is, it's very slowly, my girlfriend seems to think that she is getting better, but I'm not sure I agree). She's eating & drinking however, she's never stopped that I'm aware of! Am I being too impatient for her to begin looking better or what's my next step? Thank you!

That is a sinus infection that most likely has hardened, once this happens meds will not fix it and it will have to be removed surgically.
There are several folks here that have been threw this and can guide you threw the surgery if you do not have a vet close by to do it for you.
Hang in there someone will be along to help

If everything is still soft ..... one drop of injectable Tylan ON the eye ... every day .And 2 cc Tylan injecable in the neck onder the skin.

I am glad you posted this, perhaps we can get some more ideas since she is not responding. Then again it is a lot of infection to reabsorb back into the system, it may take longer and a few more shots. Maybe even duplex shots of Baytril and Penicillin, one ml each.

Can you post a more recent picture? Like one from today?

Tylan injections cause tissue damage, bird is already getting baytril injections. Is it possible to take bird to vet? Zaz is right
Edited to add, was responding to Dani's post, I don't see benefit of adding tylan, especially injection in neck area. Bird likely needs surgery

Question for the group; the swelling started last weekend, he said it was not hard under the swelling. I had a turkey that looked this bad last year and I gave the Tylan shot directly into the sinus and it worked wonderfully. I have never done that to a pea, is that an option?

The bottom pic of her right side was taken Wednesday evening! I'll get another pic of her this afternoon and post it today! Everyone should also know that I'm new to peafowl ownership so I'm not sure that I'm comfortable performing "surgery" on my own bird. I'm not sure my guts could handle it either unless it's not THAT intense. I appreciate all the info so far, keep it coming!!

I'll also check this afternoon if the place on her eye/head is hard or soft.....honestly, I haven't checked for that! I was asked if she has been wormed, and the answer is YES. She was wormed in early fall!

We did it a couple of times but only to turkeys, it was before I had any sinus problems with peas. As a matter of fact, we had a freeloading wild turkey hanging around all last winter. It got a big puffy head too, we managed to catch it and gave it a Tylan injection, one ml, into the sinus. We were not able to catch it again, but it got better right away.

It hung around until spring and left with the flock of wild turkeys that migrate upstream in the spring. Along with two of our tame turkeys.

Kyle, press on the swelling and feel for a hardness inside, if there is not a hard pea sized lump in there it will not require any surgery. Usually, that hard knot will take some time to develop, not just a few days.
