Sick Rooster!

I believe there may be a case for surgically removing the plaques because they may be harbouring the infection. Mud fever is like that with horses and I know it is very painful but necessary to remove the lesions in order to bottom the infection.
@casportpony posted some before and after photos on another thread recently discussing canker, where the scabs had clearly been physically removed. There was some bleeding but not excessive by the look of it. Hopefully Kathy will be able to come and comment/advise on the practicalities of that more direct method of treatment on this thread.

Day 5 of meds and he still has sores in his mouth. Can we go 7 days with this?

It's always best to consult your vet if you feel like you need to extend a dosing period.
We are not vets nor experts.
Plumb's Vet Drug Manual states dosing information for Metronidazole in birds is 50mg/kg once daily for 5days.

So I read in one of @casportpony articles that it could be 5-7 day treatment when using this medicine. I guess i'll do some more research and decide what we'll do.
Some pigeon people give it twice a day for weeks. Keep in mind that canker is rare in chickens and there are other things that can look just like it. Have you removed the plaques?

Edited to add:
Things that look like cancer are wet pox, bacterial infections, and cancer.

Only accidentally. Should we remove the rest? The meds do look like they are helping. The plaques have gone down since we started with the meds.

50mg once a day. Yesterday was the 5th dose. What is the best way to remove them. It looks like he has some on the underneath of his tongue. Maybe with a toothpick on the side of his beak but the tongue, I don't know.
