I have a Wyandotte hen ( 2 1/2 years old ) that recently became thin and her comb is unusually pale. She is becoming lethargic and has a wet cough. When she breaths you can her her throat gargle. She is eating and drinking as far as I can tell but she can't keep it down. Her eyes look fine though. I think that it is respiratory issues because her crop is not swollen. Her breath dose smell sour though... and that is a symptom of sour crop, so I am confused

. A couple of months ago I had a chicken with very similar symptoms that died. I live in California so I get free biopsies on any chickens that die. The results were that her crop was somehow blocked and because of this her kidney failed and so even though the crop let some substance through she died anyway. I am hopping that it is something that can be fixed with home remedies. Any help is greatly appreciated, I am one of those people that love their chickens like family... I would hate to loose her. Thanks for your help!

I just checked on her again and her breathing sounds like drinking the last sip of a soda through a straw. She is sitting in the nesting box but not laying eggs. She is getting more pale and is very thin. her crop is empty like it was last night. she did not throw up when I picked her up this morning, but I am still worried.
Please help! She is such a sweetheart!

Very sorry for your troubles. :(

It may be that impacted crop turned sour and the stress allowed a secondary respiratory infection to start up.

If she's not eating or drinking on her own, you'll have to tube her liquids to keep her alive long enough for the treatment to work. If her crop is impacted, you can tube a little olive oil to her and massage it to potentially break up any clumps of material in there.

I have very little experience with crop troubles, so I hope someone with more info can help you.

Thank you! So should I treat for sour crop in addition to olive oil? Also, do you happen to know how to treat it?

I read that I should mix olive oil and apple cider vinegar with water and use a syringe to make her drink it. I also read to mash yogurt together with feed and force her to eat that too. During this proses I am supposed to isolate her. Is any of this true? I don't want to do the wrong thing. Thanks!

Sorry, I meant process, not proses.

I would move her to someplace dim, quiet, and warm.

Unsure about the treatments. I've read that you can use Minister capsules to treat the yeast, but I've go no idea about the dosage. :/

Okay, I will look into that. Thanks! Do you have to get it from the vet or is it a CVS kind of thing?
