Sierra Mountains-Gold Country-Foothills

Hi harbisgirl! Welcome to the Sierra's and the chicken world. What are you planning on getting for your stock? There are a lot of people with chickens around you who can help with that. I just went to Grass Valley last Saturday and picked up 47 chicks all from 0 weeks to 3 weeks for everyone here in the Reno area. We are having a blast with them. I kept 2 for me and they are the best I've ever had. I won't be doing hatchery chicks anymore that's for sure.

I love helping the local chicken people with their flocks as much as needed around here.

what a wonderful chicken enabler you are! how did you manage to only keep 2?
harbisgirl, there are a lot of nice people in the area to enable, or I mean help you get started! Good luck and welcome.

It wasn't easy but I had to conserve until we expand our coop or make another one. I had 2 of my friends volunteer to keep 1 for me which I was figuring on doing until my DH John said if we get 2 can we keep them both and watch them grow up? Of course I had to say yes.

Truth be told - I'm not totally decided on which kinds of getting. I only need layers so I was thinking a few Americaunas, a few RIRs, maybe a few easter eggers. I guess I'll be at the mercy of whatever the feed store has on hand :) I'm trying not to look too hard until my setup is ready, so I don't get my heart set on them yet.

I researched about chickens and found what I thought would fit in nicely. They are all great layers but personality wise kills me a bit. I won't be doing the hatchery much anymore but it is a good way to start your flock off.

Uh oh - what's wrong with their personalities? I want friendly chickens :)

They are my Silver Laced Wyandottes. Some people I talk to say their's are one of the most docile but the ones they have came from a breeder and not a hatchery. The Blue Laced Wyandottes are fine though. I'll later on, I have a 1 week old BLRW and she's very calm compared to the ones I purchased last year.

So where do you guys get your chicks? I looked at Lee's Feed in Shingle Springs and online at Meyers but it seems that the hatching schedules are all weeks apart for the breeds that I want. Is there any way to get the ones I want all at the same time? I was hoping to get 1 of each: Ameraucana, Australorp, Easter Eggers, Orpington, Plymouth Rock and a Rhode Island Red. There isn't too much rhyme or reason of why I chose those breeds - they all appear to be good layers, get along with other chickens and are friendly to people. Any thoughts or suggestions or advice?

All of those with the exception of "true" Ameraucana are available at Bradshaw Feed in South Sac, on Bradshaw at Florin. This is my FAVORITE feed store. They sell EEs as Ameraucanas, of course. They get their chick shipments every Thursday and right now, all their pullet chick are selling out FAST. But they stay open until 6:30 on weekdays, 5:00 on Saturdays, and 2 pr 3 pn Sundays. ...Tell Amy and Connie I sent ya! :). Amy has bought fertile eggs from me for her broodies, and I'm in there all the time for supplies because it's practically on my way home from work in Sac.
