Sierra Mountains-Gold Country-Foothills

I have never in my life gotten my tomatoes in the ground this late in the year, but guess what? I'm doing it today. I have 2 roma tomato plants and 1 cherry tomato. That's all I'm gonna do this year. Winter was just too long.

I had some celery plant starts, but they all died when we got snow on May 15th.

I also have discovered that the soil at our new place is worthless. NOTHING I've planted directly into the soil has even so much as sprouted, but DH went down to the bottom of the ranch the other day and lugged me up a wheelbarrow full of fresh alpaca poop for the garden. That should help a lot, and you don't have to wait for it to breakdown because they're complete herbivores! You can plant directly into it (I would do that with flowers but not food LOL). Hopefully, it'll help our soil be less worthless.

Just this past week our weather has finally warmed up to close to where is should be..............my matoes died

About a week ago, we had a night drop down into the low 20's - killed the matoes, froze the new leaf buds off the trees, and took care of any dreams of lilac blossums.

Okay, so I have this issue and I'm just gonna be cheesy about asking.

I need a bantam pullet/hen, preferably some type of cochin, for my bantam roo who has reached the age of mating. He's half the size of the hens in the yard, and he's chasing them and grabbing beakfuls of feathers but isn't able to "engage" with any of them due to size differences.

Here's a post I made in the Wanted To Buy section this morning... and at the risk of getting in trouble for cross-posting, I'm going to post a link to it here because most likely, someone that could help out my poor Roy might be here in the area.

Just saying hello from Sonora. Get my first flock next week and we shall see how it goes. Feel free to give me any tips or tidbits of info you may have about raising these bugars in the hills as I am brand new to this and am gonna need some help. This should be interesting to say the least.

Well then I hope you don't mind if I chime in :) My husband and I moved to Placerville (Pleasant Valley area) in November and are in the process of building our chicken coop and run. I love this forum and all the great information available here. Glad to find some local peeps here too!
