Alaskan, I feel your pain. Sometime I wonder what some of the beasties around here ate, before gardeners came to plant edibles for them. It doesn't seem to matter what I plant, there is always something that wants it at least as much as I do, but is more determined to get it.
Blueberries, for example. They grow native here, and I can even point to numerous native bushes growing in my yard. But we have a few cultivated varieties that Critter planted in the yard, and we put bird netting over them. My mother saw that and asked, "What's with the nets? Don't want to share with the birds?" I told her, "I don't mind sharing with the birds. Problem is, they don't share with me. If we didn't use the nets, we wouldn't get any berries at all!"
