I think crack would address both issues- easily attainable and generates an alternate reality.

Alaskan thinks it would be better to become an alcoholic than a crack addict.

But, Alaskan was hoping for a safer and better and cheaper addiction. Alaskan considered an addiction to sucking on leeches. But then what would Alaskan do in the winter?

Or, Alaskan could develop an addiction to icicle sucking, but then what to do in the summer?
