Oh, I think Big Blonde was just being her worst b*tchy boss mare self. They get fed in the stalls, so even though there wasn't any food there at the time, the barn's a prime site for territory/food aggression issues. I think I should have built the stalls with two doors, that way, there'd always be a way out. A 12' x 12' stall feels nice and roomy, until you are in there with two horses, and one doesn't want the other one in there. Then, it feels about the size of an elevator.![]()
Latte's a Quarter Horse, and I don't know what her exact breeding is, but I get the impression she has fast-twitch muscle fibers out the wazoo. I once saw her punch another horse in the jaw. Well, I didn't actually see the blow, what I saw was Latte sort of jump, then I got splattered with horse spit, and the other horse was working her mouth like it really hurt. That she could land that many kicks before Sunny could get out the door doesn't surprise me at all.![]()
No, nothing's changed - other than the weather. I've seen Latte feeling pretty frisky on cool mornings lately, but last night wasn't all that cool (low 60's). There aren't any geldings here, so it's a bit hard to tell, but it could be hormones, I suppose.Oh my goodnesss.... Has the herd dynamic changed some how? Dominance issues do change as horses age.... My mare is a Beta passive agressive she does the stink eye and because shes two thousand pounds the herd clears a path.... But if someone biches back she finishes it wither her huge number 5 s. I have seen her punch a hole in plywood with em.
an option would be to lock em in at dinner time. then feed them breakfast before letting them out.
The scrapes if they are just hair removed and not cuts look aweful but respond very well to standard treatments.... Cool water washes wound coat.... I used to make my own salve out of lard and antiseptic foot powder.... Used to be sulfa powder but its cant be bought now without a prescription. but just the lard works too....
Are your horses shod? hoof prints from shod horses are worse.
Its amazing how much punch they can deliver with their heads..... but when you think about it ist all bone....
