*sigh* I'm loosing my touch. (Warning: Hi-jacked by Em)

Well, I'm feeling thoroughly disgusted this morning. Just after we went to bed last night, Critter and I heard a ruckus in the barn. It sounded bad enough that we went out to investigate; didn't see anything amiss, so we just shrugged it off and went back in the house. This morning I found out what it was. Apparently my horse Latte cornered BB2K's horse in a stall and kicked the cr*p out of her. I counted 12 hoof marks on Sunny's hip and flank. Not all are cuts; the worst is a scrape about 1 1/2 inches wide and 6 inches long on her ribs. The crazy thing is, these two are buddies, and have been for years. I regularly see them swishing each others' flies and grooming each other; Latte particularly will totally wig out if she loses sight of Sunny. With friends like that, eh?

Oh, I think Big Blonde was just being her worst b*tchy boss mare self. They get fed in the stalls, so even though there wasn't any food there at the time, the barn's a prime site for territory/food aggression issues. I think I should have built the stalls with two doors, that way, there'd always be a way out. A 12' x 12' stall feels nice and roomy, until you are in there with two horses, and one doesn't want the other one in there. Then, it feels about the size of an elevator.

Latte's a Quarter Horse, and I don't know what her exact breeding is, but I get the impression she has fast-twitch muscle fibers out the wazoo. I once saw her punch another horse in the jaw. Well, I didn't actually see the blow, what I saw was Latte sort of jump, then I got splattered with horse spit, and the other horse was working her mouth like it really hurt. That she could land that many kicks before Sunny could get out the door doesn't surprise me at all.

Oh my goodnesss.... Has the herd dynamic changed some how? Dominance issues do change as horses age.... My mare is a Beta passive agressive she does the stink eye and because shes two thousand pounds the herd clears a path.... But if someone biches back she finishes it wither her huge number 5 s. I have seen her punch a hole in plywood with em.

an option would be to lock em in at dinner time. then feed them breakfast before letting them out.

The scrapes if they are just hair removed and not cuts look aweful but respond very well to standard treatments.... Cool water washes wound coat.... I used to make my own salve out of lard and antiseptic foot powder.... Used to be sulfa powder but its cant be bought now without a prescription. but just the lard works too....

Are your horses shod? hoof prints from shod horses are worse.

Its amazing how much punch they can deliver with their heads..... but when you think about it ist all bone....

No, nothing's changed - other than the weather. I've seen Latte feeling pretty frisky on cool mornings lately, but last night wasn't all that cool (low 60's). There aren't any geldings here, so it's a bit hard to tell, but it could be hormones, I suppose.

But yeah, I told Critter. "If Latte were wearing shoes, that could have been 'call the vet' time."

Sunny isn't lame, but she seems to contemplate moving for a moment before she actually does it - so yeah, I'd say she's sore. I gave her some Banamine, I have kept it on hand for the minis for years (not a good idea to give Bute to a mini). I really need to get some Bute as well, it's not as expensive, and I understand there are some things that it works better for, anyway.

It's funny that you asked about Critter being sore. Critter is my DH. He'd been putting in a brick patio for someone for the last couple of days, so yeah, he's pretty sore, too. Don't think it would be a good idea to give him Banamine, though; he'll have to make do with Ibuprofen.
