Eons ago, when I was in college, I spent a couple of summers working as a camp counselor. When we put the lights out at night, my campers often said good night to each other, but for some reason, the girls nearly fell out of their bunks if I said, "Good night, John Boy."

When I hear that I think of The Garfield comic. His country brother's name was john boy.

Jon is Garfield's owner. His brother's name is Doc Boy.

John Boy was the oldest son (and to some degree, the narrator) in the 70's TV series, The Waltons. Every episode ended with an outside shot of the big farmhouse at night, with lights burning in a couple of the windows. Voices of a couple of the family members would be heard, talking about something relating to the events of the show, usually ending with a gently humorous twist. Finally, they'd say good night to each other, so one of the last lines of almost every episode was, "Good night, John Boy." It became a gag line for a lot of humorists, too.
