Sign Stolen?

Update on the sign:

Many Christian and non-Christian groups have now posted signs with rebuttals to the atheism sign, including a guy requesting permission to put up a Festivus display. And, like a bad penny, the Westboro Baptist Church is now requesting permission to put up a sign that says:

You'd better watch out, get ready to cry, You'd better go hide, I'm telling you why 'cuz Santa Claus will take you to hell. He is your favorite idol, you worship at his feet, but when you stand before your God He won't help you take the heat. So get this fact straight: you're feeling God's hate, Santa's to blame for the economy's fate, Santa Claus will take you to hell.

How long before you're shoving elves out of your way to get down the hallway of the capitol building? Aren't they going to run out of room soon?

I still cannot believe the hubub that this sign has created! Our family was going to tour the Capital building to see all the decorations, but with all the furor, I think we'll skip it this year! As I've said before, almost embarrassed to say I live here!
I know this could have happened in any other state, of course, but I live HERE. I love my city, and I love the cultural and religious diversity in this city. This is a beautiful place to live and raise a family, and it seems that's been tainted because of the need for some people to have something to be offended about.
I still maintain that NO religious or other expression of belief should be allowed on government ground- It just causes so many problems.
Maybe our founding fathers went through something like this- isn't there something about separation of church and state? Hmmm...

Shoot, they could have put up the sign without stating that basically everyone who believes is wrong and should stop. They also dont need to celebrate Christmas, they say its the winter solstice but thats not on the 25th.

I don't agree with placing the sign there (or ANY sign) but this IS our season to celebrate just as much as christians. They didn't place the sign up for one day only on Dec. 25th. I am preparing for winter solstice celebrations now just as many are preparing for Christmas celebrations. Trust me, people who celebrate Solstice KNOW it is not on the 25th and I don't think they tried to say it is.

I mean, I personally would celebrate the winter solstice on the winter solstice, Christians practice Christmas because that's when Jesus was born. Not that I have any problem with atheism, everything is good with me. I just believe it would make more sense, to me anyway

But even MOST Christians realize that their Christ wasn't really born on Dec. 25th. I don't know anyone who celebrates Solstice on Dec. 25th aside from getting together with family who are celebrating on that particular day. It is the Holiday SEASON which pretty much covers from Dec. 1st through Jan. 1st.

On the topic of "separation of church and state", that's part of the constitution of the old Soviet Union- not the U.S. Ours says Congress shall not make laws to inhibit our free practice of religion-freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion. Something I've seen on this thread really bothers me, though. It breaks my heart that so many people have horror stories about hurtful things that have been done to them in the name of Christ. True Christianity isn't a religion, it's a relationship. On behalf of many other believers who truly love and try to obey our Lord, I just want to say I'm really, really sorry. The Bible does teach about God's judgement and consequences for sin, but that's never an excuse to beat people up. Jesus said He came to save the world, not judge it. I was an atheist, too, when I was a teenager. I went to church to meet a boy and listened to sermons along the way. Then one night in the shower I said, "God, if your really real, I'll do it." He was and I did. In the last 39 years I've seen some mind boggling answers to prayer.
Again, I'm very sorry you've been hurt.

There are definite advantages to belief in a monotheist, but to quote George Bernard Shaw, "The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one."

The exact legend of creation is the same foundational myth of all three monotheistic religions. The chosen people, those of the Jewish faith, were the first to believe in a mono (one) god. God was worshiped as the end-all to every thing, being responsible for all that was good and all that was bad. With time, it became difficult to worship a one god who allowed such horrid things to happen, so "Satan" (or, the devil) was created to take the flak and offer explanations for why things go so badly. After the creation of the devil it was easier to give glory to the one god and create fables of burning in hell (christians) and possession of the devil.

I do believe that "faith" is what keeps most people mildly sane; on the other hand, it's that same "faith" which causes many psychotic episodes. Christians are the most loving people on earth. So are Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Buddhists, Agnostics, Atheists, et al.

The major problem with religions is the demand to interfere with the lives of others. It's a desire to gain power "in this life", it does not allow coexistence between different faiths.

There is a little book sold through Amazon entitled, "7 Words" or something like that. It condenses life pretty well: Respect yourself, respect others, and respect your environment. Seems any of the 3 might be difficult at times, eh?
