They are just ruthless, in my opinion. Mind you, I have met some RIR's that were sweet. I think the aggressive majority comes from the game breeds RIR's are made of.Mhmmmmm
I had a Dominique/RIR. He was real purty, but he was a mean SOB. My mom gladly slit his throat when we made up our minds that he needed to go. He HATED her.Roosters and me don't usually mix well. I've been attacked by huge RIR roos...I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER RIR ROOSTER AGAIN!
Mine were too aggressive to even grab to cut their necks. I had to put them down with a 410 Shot GunI had a Dominique/RIR. He was real purty, but he was a mean SOB. My mom gladly slit his throat when we made up our minds that he needed to go. He HATED her.
Yes, that's why I'm settling down with calmer friendlier breeds like Rocks, Cochins, Orpingtons, and SultansNow, my policy is that if a rooster flogs or bites anyone, he goes to Freezer Camp. There are too many nice roosters to put up with the mean ones.
Wow, that is insane...... I've never had a bird that bad, thank goodness. I had some Cochin/Dominiques cockerels that were nasty too. Oddly enough, their sisters are lovely birds.Mine were too aggressive to even grab to cut their necks. I had to put them down with a 410 Shot Gun![]()
I have a 2 year old and plan on having more kids, I can't afford to have nasty birds. I select against human aggression, chick aggression, and excessive aggression to other roosters VERY heavily. I also consider how they treat the hens. Between those and selecting for type/size, I only had one Buff Orp cock last out of 16.Yes, that's why I'm settling down with calmer friendlier breeds like Rocks, Cochins, Orpingtons, and Sultans![]()
