Silence Is Not Golden Here

Some of the eggs that were sent are older - The breeder mentioned that right off, that they were as much as a couple weeks old. So we'll see how they are for viability. I think that's part of why she sent me so many - to see how well they're holding viability. She did something I haven't seen with any other eggs I ordered.. which, realistically, is just two batches of Serama eggs. She bubble-wrapped them individually, had them inside one box laying down - not in cartons, not upright - with layers of bubble wrap, and aluminum foil lining the box. Then that box inside a larger box, with bubble wrap padding on all sides.

A few of the air pockets are a bit saddled, but to my surprise, not very many. And none were completely broken loose.
I used that technique too when shipping eggs. I am probably not going to do that any more though, cause it is rather faulty in my opinion

Previous eggs I received were wrapped in paper towels inside an egg carton, with packing material around them. The first was clearly labeled 'hatching eggs, do not x-ray', etcetera. The second just had 'eggs' written on the top in black sharpie, in small letters. This batch were clearly marked, as well. Of the three shipments, these actually have the best looking air pockets. I am not a patient person - I'm not looking forward to having to wait a few more days before I candle all of the eggs to get an idea of total fertility.

So I have a broody Jersey Giant who has been sitting since May 19. Don’t freak out anybody, she gets up to eat and drink and poop and is fine. I make sure to get her to eat extra nummies. And no, I’m not going to break her at the moment, too busy for that right now. She hasn’t been any trouble where she is at.

Anyhow, none of her eggs hatched, in the first batch. She was in the top most coveted nesting box so I’m not surprised. One exploded and that was gross.:sick

I tried putting 3 other fertile eggs that were a week or so away from hatching. I had stolen them from my leghorns staggered nest after she and her two babies moved off. Those eggs are just gone now; she or another may have eaten them when they started to hatch or they may have been trampled by my other hens. Anything could have happened to them.

Point of all this is that she is stiiiillllll sitting and I’m in crazy want of one white naked neck rooster... so I’m debating on ordering 6-10 males from a hatchery (maybe a couple meaties too) and seeing what she does. I’ll eat the ones I don’t want to keep. I’m so bonkers. Someone please slap me.

Hello fellow Albertan! :celebrate. If you want a hatchery in Canada with an extremely wide variety of chickens look no further than Performance Poultry! Believe me, they have almost everything there. They are a huge incubation facility that breeders sell their chicks through by sending the hatchery their hatching eggs.
