And there we go. Six little silver butts in the brooder, incubator is washed, sprayed down with Chlorhexidine and air drying prior to being put into storage. Photos to follow when everyone fluffs up, but on cursory examination between the incubator and the brooder, #6 looks perfectly fine.

I would love to know what caused the dry-out in my eggs this time. That's never happened before. They just lost way too much fluid, way too fast. I was actually having trouble keeping the incubator humidity down as low as is recommended, when I started out with so many eggs... and the two incidences where the AC went off both happened later in incubation, one right after mid-way when I noticed they'd lost too much moisture.

I think that's what happened to #6 - it just didn't have ENOUGH fluid left in its egg.

It might be an egg porosity issue. I used to have my incubation humidity at 45% to start, now I can't get it below 50-55%, but the eggs are doing just fine. I think my hens may be laying eggs that are more porous in this humidity. Since the breeder is on the east coast where it is more humid, the eggs are more porous than AZ eggs.

Yup. I got a chantecler trio from her. She's been so helpful in trying to help me figure out why I've been having such a low hatch rate (2 out of over 40).

What is KDays?

Here in Canada we call fairs exhibitions. Kdays was originally called klondike days. It's Edmonton's annual exhibition. (My house is just a few blocks from the exhibition grounds, but I don't live there anymore. It's for sale).

Great job! I've helped chicks before the 24 hr rule and it saved them. The two I particularly had in mind, zipped but were stuck. They had too much fluid in their shell and as they zipped it dried out and cemented them in the shell so they couldn't push out. Both are very healthy vigorous birds now. The extra fluid was the result of poorly maintained incubator temps.

I've had several like that this year. I've soaked them and worked on them for hours, but I intervened too late. They usually lasted 2 days after I got all of the gunk off.
