Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

For all of you who have, like me, been dealing with the controversy of what to call a "porcelain", I was looking at the top winners on the ASBC site and saw a winning "Porcelain" show by George Mihalik who is I believe the main, initial breeder of the color. So, what do you all think this means??

To me it means, if he wants to show under that name, I will too .....

If they DQ us, so be it.

Quote: 2004 would be too early for a porcelain. And yes, those greys are grey (look at their breasts and hackles--lots of silver showing).

2008 and 2010 links show porcelains. On 2008 the individual bird photos play through a sequence at the top of the page; there are a couple of porcelains. On 2010 there is one.

Yes, George is the creator of porcelains. He has said to call them self-blue cream. Marty McGuire wrote up a working standard after talking it over with George and Sherri H (very sweet lady who took on George's flock for him and continues to rely on his breeding advice).

I don't see one on 2010? I see the one for 2008 but it's hard to really look at. I put my girl down as porcelain for a january show, I hope she doesn't get DQed

I believe Marty told me to enter mine as "Blue Cream" as opposed to "self blue cream". If it were self blue cream, I would totally be on board but I gather the APA/ABA won't go for "self blue cream" any more than "porcelain". I find the whole thing VERY frustrating!

But I will do what I am told. I entered mine as "Porcelain", "Blue Cream", "Opal" based on what the judge (Terry Britt) told me at the show (2012 Canadian National.) Submitted the results to the ASBC as "Porcelain".

oooooooh... well then at least it is a color a judge can better relate to. I put down "creamsicle" last time and got funny looks

by her feathering, do you think it was a good idea or am I gonna get it? She looks like a darker porcelain to me from pictures i've seen, she WAS from a partridge breeding.

No, George likes the simplicity of "Blue Cream." Marty said that Self-Blue Cream is a better choice as it is the lavender (self-blue) gene at work. Until there is consistency in what is actually shown (the appearance), APA & ABA won't go for them. Opal has already been submitted as a name for recognition in OEGB (there are threads on it both here and on The-Coop), and both its appearance and genetics are entirely different.

Marty is a judge, and I believe is on the Joint Standards Committee. (Not 100% positive, but I think that is what I read.)

My suggestion is to send George a photo and talk to him...either via email or phone. You'll probably get better conversation via phone.

I get it. In the meantime, it IS fun to get the birds out. My cockerel was/is a real "looker". Got a TON of attention in Canada. Not really what the "porcelain" folks are going for in the US (he's over the top colourful, less than perfect comb, eyes aren't as dark as they could be) but I get that and I'm working forward, also understanding that it is also positive to create attention. (I believe my female IS something George and Marty would approve of and I've just hatched out 3 more "porcelains" that I hope will contribute to the pool .... )
