DragonLady I have one for you also. Mine was born looking a lot like a self blue with pure white wings. As it is getting older it's head has a greenish cast. I thought perhaps a silver gene white? I'm posting this right now in case you are still online.


Here second from left you can see the difference in the color from a dark blue and a light blue on each side.

Looks like a silver grey to me, or maybe a splash. What was the breeding ? BBS ?

Hi, Dragonlady! I have a beautiful white chick that came as a big surprise from my blue, black pair. It was born light blue but is now very white (5 weeks). I don't have any white and wondering if there is a place I can use it if it turns out to be breed worthy. It's a beautiful chick. I know you have use white in unique ways so thought I'd get your feed back.

White chicks typically hatch out yellow. Here is my "silver" white that hatched last week. Next to a typical white chick. Does yours look like this one?

Keep that chick ! It is PURE fior white. If you don't want to breed snow whites, sell it to someone who does.

If I breed it back to a parent, how likely to get more?

Hello! I was wondering if it is normal for my silkie chick to have a bald butt. This is my first time having chickens with my dad so I have know clue...LOL well thanks!

Was it born that way? If so, not normal.

Here's a photo at birth and at three weeks. All new feathers are coming in white at 5 weeks.

Peepblessed, I see why you were confused - that chick looks almost lavender in chick coloring but is coming in white. If you breed it back to its parent you will get more silver based whites (I believe its recessive white?).

This is something I got from the ABC thread on Silver Ameraucanas. I believe on wild type coloring you can tell the boys from the girl right after hatch on those chipmunk chicks. The girls have very defined lines.. i.e. dark/light/dark - no fuzzy lines. The lines may also be narrower.. The boy's lines are fuzzy and are not distinct. The one to the far left has the clearest lines.. that would be girl if it follows that rule. The one in the middle is very fuzzy - boy. The one on the right is mid way - so I don't know for sure - it could go either way... that one you might not know until it lays an egg...

It is used to tell the boys from the girls on the breeds that are autosexible at hatch. I think on Cream Crested Legbars I think?

That's interesting. I wonder if that works with Silkies?
Has anyone that breeds for partridges paid attention to something like this?

Just learning genetics but I believe the one on the left is gold based and the one on the right is silver based - which Dragonlady called "Pure for white". The coloring on the right one will be brighter and not leak gold (because there is no gold in there to leak)...
Exactly. BUT there are varying degrees...some look yellow AND silver so I'm not sure what the explanation for that would be...

I think Peep's looks a bit more silver or gray than my little one. Reminds me of a splash...could it be a very light splash with fewer "splashes"?

If it had a spot of pasty butt and then pulled the blob of poop off, feathers can come off with it. If it is not red or irritated, I would just wait and see what it does. If it is eating, drinking and acting normal it will probably be fine, but I am sure others will chime in with various opinions.
