Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Excellent, more information on their background. If he had Partridge stripes when he was little then yes, with one cross you can get partridge if the hen is a carrier too. Its there - and prominent enough to show on the chick down. My crosses done with a Partridge roo x Buff and two Blues - I have 10 chicks with Partridge stripes! I looked at the Buff hen really carefully and I could see the partridge markings on her wings and chest - so I am closer than I thought because she would be called a "Smutty Buff" and her brothers would show black on their tails and wings. I also got about 10 Blue/Silver chicks with no partridge stripes, so now I know the rooster is actually Black because I didn't get any Splash. Got one black chick... and one white one

. Rooster carries white and one hen does too. Some of those Chicks will now throw white.

I am going to keep all the females from this batch and cross them back to the Partridge rooster. Even the blue ones carry partridge now (if they didn't before). Chances would then be 50/50 to get partridges instead of solids. I suspect the Blue Frizzle hen carries partridge as her chicks were half Blonde Partridge and half Blue. The other Blue doesn't carry partridge, all of her eggs were blue chicks.

The white in most Silkies is recessive white and it needs two copies to show. If you were getting 25% white then your rooster carries white and one hen carries white. The results would be 50% white carrier, 25% white and 25% not a white carrier.

If you cross White x White all babies will have two copies, that's why they are all white. If you cross white to another color that doesn't carry white then none of the babies will look white, but all will carry white - for the next generation.

I suspect the gentleman who is arguing that you will not get Partridge from a Buff x Blue cross isn't allowing for the mixed genetics of most Silkies. Very few have "Pure" lines with no mixes. The best way to see - is to DO IT!

i don't know how to reply but i agree lol ... its not like your doing mixes like cross breeding or anything its just different color of the same kind of breed right so i don't see why he wouldn't agree or anything but i hope i get some nice chicks out of it im still waiting for my blue hen to start laying again no eggs today from her or my black hen i don't know what is with onyx (black hen) she was laying before but not anymore i don't know why though

Well it's hard to take nice pictures when they are in a garage, but here is the best I could do.

Blue male.

The three whites, though one of the whites is dyed green

The other white hen is nesting in this picture. She laid her egg very strangely. She kept trying to get under everyone until finally she just laid it.. It was very weird..

Here is the white male.. I wish he wasn't so trimmed.

The green girl looks to be in the best of condition. Probably because she's been trying to set for quite some time and not accepting of any advances.. I still need to bathe both the boys.
I'm seeing a lot of promise in this group!!
Oh and Peepblessed, Henry is doing AWESOME. He is so big now! 16 weeks!

I absolutely love this pup!!

You did reply.. so it worked.

You are doing cross color breedings, some people don't like that. The thing is, there have been so many done in the past, and will be done in the future - and Silkied feathers do not show patterns well - that you will always have some uncertainty as to what you will get. Early on in this thread there was a lady breeding for blues - but her blue chicks looked like Partridges. They all grew up into really nice blues. They are still partridge based, and when crossed with a rooster carrying Partridge they would get full Partridge children. Its really confusing when you cross two Blue birds and you get Partridge - but that has happened. I have one Blue girl who carries partridge, and one Blue who does not.

The hens may have stopped laying because you changed something. When I move chickens sometimes they quit for a week or two - chickens don't like change.
