Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

The problem is that she is NOT a blue Partridge. A Blue Partridge would have blue partridge markings on all her feathers. She is a very nice, typey, Blue, with red leakage. You need to get a Standard to see the color patterns.

I honestly thought that it was a cockerel with that patterning...until she said the bird is laying. It kind of looks like a blue partridge, but without the penciling!

Okay, thanks. And by the standard, you are talking about the APA SOP, correct? The pullet came from a partridge roo and a blue partridge hen. I'm not sure what the parents actually looked like, however. If I may ask, what would be the best course of action for breeding? I have a partridge cockerel, but he is from the same bloodlines.

JUst keep the Silver chicks, and you are on your way.

I think there is more involved that just silver, although I think silver probably HELPS. My first grey hen stayed grey for most of her first year, then turned brassy: to almost look partridge. With a new molt she looked like a nice clean grey....and then in a shorter time turned brassy...and every year she stays clean less and less time...even if I keep her completely out of the sun. Last time I checked, she stays a clean grey about two weeks after her molt is complete.
Wow that sounds very odd. Interesting....

Looks identical to my cockerel I posted a few pages back...maybe more than a few. It was a mutt out of a splash and a white. Pretty indeed, but still a color mutt.

So for those of you who don't know, Icelynn hasn't been doing well. She has had an egg stuck inside her for over a week. At first we all(including my vet) thought it was eggbinding, but no matter what we did it just would not come out. After talking to Peter Brown we came to the conclusion she was most likely an "internal layer" and the egg is actually inside her abdominal cavity just floating around. I attempted a surgical procedure myself, making a small incision (1/2 inch) to see if I could see the egg. But it was deeper than it felt and I saw more membrane than I was comfortable cutting into so I just sewed her back up. Peter and I decided to try to get her to stop laying eggs so she's been off food and water for 24 hours. Just came home today to find she layed a "rubber" egg =) So that means she CAN still pass eggs, but i'm still going to try to keep her from laying to give her a much needed break. The egg inside her body cavity might be re-absorbed, but most likely will be walled off and remain there forever. She should be able to live with it. Unfortunately if it doesn't re-absorb I will never be able to show her =/

I was reading your posts on the FB Silkie page... I'm glad she is starting to feel better!

HELP HELP!! I went to check on my silkies yesterday evening, and one of my sweet blue splash hens was stranded in the middle of my kiddy duck pool!! I don't know HOW she's alive since the water was just under her neck, and it was a cooler day. When I saw her little head trying to stay conscious, I ran over and pulled her out, rushed her in the house and started drying her off. By this point she seemed almost dead. Her body temp was cold and she could barely move her head!! I put the hair dryer on her and tried to get her temp back up, and I have her a cpl drops of sugar water. After holding her for a couple hours and determining she was somewhat stable, I set her up in a small tub with some heat, but today even tho she seems more conscious, she won't stand up. She's still so Shaky, and I haven't seen her eat or drink anything!! I'm so worried!! When I picked her up, she peed and pooped, which I Thot was good, but I don't know what else to do to help her?! I know she needs rest after sitting in that water for a couple hours, what what else can I do? Thanks for hearing me out guys!! I just love her. Her name is dotty

You might have to hand feed/water her.

What do I feed her??
Take some peanut butter, and add enough water to make a slurry that you can put into a syringe, or eye dropper. Feed her that a few times. This works for all sorts of birds, wild, and chickens. It is very high energy.

THe other thing you might get from your vet is NUTRICAL. It is a paste. You give 1/2 inch 3 x a day, and water. Again, very high energy , high caloric stuff. It works .
