Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Here is the pullet with the buff around her neck.

Here is Angus with one of her chicks playing "king of the he"! Angus is one of my true blacks. Oh...here is a hint to keep color from burning. I put shade cloth like you use on greenhouses over my runs..lets some sun in but not enough to affect color.

That's a partridge, use her with lavender and buff if you want to get porcelain

Question from a newbie, I was thinking bout getting small/medium birds in the spring/summer, (I have Coturnix quail ATM), is Silkie only for show, or is it a egg/meat bird?

Eggs are small, and not always consistent. Meat/skin/bones are black but if you don't mind that then they can be eaten, but they are mainly oriental.

VetRx (poultry version) can be found at the feed store. It smells nice and also helps with respiratory issues. A drop of VetRx can be placed on each nostril and will help relax the bird when you are handling it. In looking at your picture, I think your bird will be fine after a bath and VetRx.
Today I check him/her and his/ her wattles looked a lot better after I applied some vaseline on them. However, the skin on hi/her body seems very dry and flaky. I found the VetRX, the oatmeal shampoo, so now I just need the flea and tick shampoo. I will give him/her a bath tomorrow and hopefully it will get better.

She looks blue to me with some gold leakage... but I might be wrong.

This looks like a girl. I would use VetRX on it, as it is likely some kind of infection and not simply dry skin. VetRX is safe on the face and near the eyes, you can rub right over the top of the eye lids, too. A bath in flea and tick puppy shampoo would be a great idea, too.

Agreed! You will never get that gold leakage out! You can only use black X black and get mostly clean girls and the boys will likely carry the leakage. Eventually you would want to cull and get away from ANY bird having leaking in your blacks. I bought my blacks out of a line of clean blacks I got from Birds of Paradise (President of ASBC)-- but you'll find that in a lot of other lines the males will carry gold leakage. Definitely not to be used over blues or splash.
DragonLady-- sorry you are sick, I've been out for a good couple of weeks with flu and bronchitis. I'm still dizzy and not feeling well. I can't believe how long it's hanging on. I don't know if i ever told you, but the last two shows we went to-- the Nationals and a local Special meet for the ASBC club I used the Downy in the rinse on all of my birds and I am VERY pleased with how their feathers turned out. Shows start back up in a couple of months, so that's going to be my go-to! Love how they smell, too.

Bobbie Porto has a few reds. They are not breeding true as far as I know, it's a total fluke. But I know there are a few other people playing around with that color trying to work on it. As far as I know, they are working/trading together and are not selling their birds/eggs right now. Anyway, I don't know if you could talk Porto out of a red or not, but that would be a place to start asking.

X2. That was great advice! VetRX is a GREAT product and can be rubbed on the legs and face. I would be really worried about favus too!
Good to have you back! Did you get the flu shot?
Well...not sure. I bought a dozen eggs from a woman and they where suppose to be paints and lavenders. Well....of the ones that hatched I got the 2 Buff ones in previous post a lavender and the black with the leakage. She doesn't have partridge. She said that they are techinically paints...but I don't know really what to think. It may be that only breeding and hatching their eggs are going to tell me anything. If you are familiar with paints is this right to have them turn out buff and black with buff around neck?
Even paint to paint does not breed true and any number of odd colors can come from a paint pen.

I wouldn't use this color in breeding "porcelain" if you are talking about self-blue cream. It's commonly two copies of lavender and one copy of buff.
