Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

I did a test on one I was pretty sure was dark blue. I've hatch about 15 chicks so far and no splash. This picture was taken with a flash and you can see the under fluff in his tail looks pretty light. He does have lots of green in the sun.
then I'd say you have a black!! But from here on, you can cull for the deep blacks and sell the ones that are lighter. Hopefully you will get some chicks that are darker than others. Maybe Sonoran or DragonLady would have some input on what to do!

ETA-- came back to add that he really does look blue to me!! Did the flash really wash him out?

Okay, I just went out and took a couple pictures of one of my blacks. This one is a little pullet under a year old, not laying yet. Someone asked if anyone who had blacks could post a picture of the underfluff on a black bird. So I took a picture of it:

These are unedited pictures-- this is pretty much what she looks like. But I think she looks darker in person. She seems lighter in these pictures to me. But this gives the general idea of what a Black looks like.

Why do you not want to use a black from a BBS pen in your BBsS pen? He should carry the genes for lacing bred back to BBS.You don't really see the lacing on a Silkie, but the hackle will be the correct color. Look at the srandard. There is a difference between self blue, and blue.
I have been very undecided with that BBS Black cockerel. He did not start out looking that way, within the last month or so he has become quite handsome. He is really impressing me lately. Everything seems to have shaped up and if he continues to impress, I'd love to use him. That is quite interesting about the lacing...

If I decide to split my BBS pen (5 blue hens, 2 splash hens), which color hens should be put with which color roos (blue and black) for the best results?

How long after I remove the rooster will the eggs be clear? Will it depend on the hen?

I am still new to chickens and Silkies and loving everything about the breed. I hatched out these 3 pullets and the cockerel 5 months ago. I think they are pretty but I would love some opinions from you more experienced owners and breeders. Do I have anything worth breeding or even showing? I love them as pets and will be happy with that, but sometimes I think it might be fun to go to a show. I know they have a lot more maturing to do since they are so young. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. I don't think they were too impressed with the snow.

Peeps4me,
I love your birds. They are very fluffy! Your rooster has a nice shape. I'm pretty new to silkies as well, so pay more attention to others that comment. I like how big their crests are. I think they are gorgeous!
The partridge has a lot of hard feathers in her tail...am I wrong in this comment? I always love to learn more!

Ok so here is another question:
Can a dark blue have green sheen?

The pullets are cute! I must say, the bottom roo looks quite handsome, I'd love to see a sideshot with a better view of his tail.

Do you know how to get in touch with the person who has the red silkies....I can't find a contact on their page. Are they on BYC? Thanks for letting me know about them.

Oops...found it!
