Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Why do you not want to use a black from a BBS pen in your BBsS pen? He should carry the genes for lacing bred back to BBS.You don't really see the lacing on a Silkie, but the hackle will be the correct color. Look at the srandard. There is a difference between self blue, and blue.
Could you please bear with me, and help me understand this a little better? I'm not grasping the lacing concept on blue silkies and how the black would carry lacing genes bred back to BBS.

We had a gorgeous blue Polish that had lacing and it was evident. Here is a page from my 2006 ABA SOP...and I am just not clear on this. Thanks!

then I'd say you have a black!! But from here on, you can cull for the deep blacks and sell the ones that are lighter. Hopefully you will get some chicks that are darker than others. Maybe Sonoran or DragonLady would have some input on what to do!

ETA-- came back to add that he really does look blue to me!! Did the flash really wash him out?
Yes, the flash did wash him out. Photos just aren't accurate but you can see that the fluff is lighter than the outer feathering. I keep expecting to get a splash, but I'm not using him anymore as my better boy is doing his job (blue). I do have a blacker roo but didn't want to breed him to siblings and mom. I'm not sure I want to do a black pen. I just don't have room. I do have a totally awesome black pullet (really dark) but I'm using her in my self-blue pen right now. Here's her pic.

Ok so here is another question:
Can a dark blue have green sheen?
Yes.
Do you know how to get in touch with the person who has the red silkies....I can't find a contact on their page. Are they on BYC? Thanks for letting me know about them.

Oops...found it!
Great!

Good question! The ABA SOP for blue says in the Judging Instructions "Lacing in the male hackle, back, wing bows and saddle should be lustrous without a green sheen." However, green is not listed as a DisqulificationI or Defect. A bit confusing...

Absolutely. I know this from experience! A couple of my dark blues that "look" black have the sheen! But they are blue.

WOW!!!! beautiful! That is so crazy that came up about the book! I have been relying on the ASBC website for the colors and today (this morning) finally gave in and ordered the American Standard of Perfection 2010 from the APA. http://www.amerpoultryassn.com/APA_ShoppingMall3.htm Book on the left--- be careful not to order the book on the right as I think it's edited for European countries and Canada....? Anyway, that is what it says.

Hawkeye would you mind taking another picture of your black but this time under its belly or wings. Mine looks like the one you showed but when I looked under the belly and wings, it seemed lighter. However the dark blues I have look much more charcoal/ blue color.
When I read the SOP about the blue undercoat they mention " bluish slate" color and for the black they refer the undercoat as "dull black" color. To me those two colors are very similar. I am a bit confused here
