Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Give the eggs a couple More days the first time a hen goes broody isn't always successful if u want all the eggs to hatch at the same time give her some from the baton but considering she may not be completely aware that she has to sit on them all the time I would have her collect some new eggs and learn from her mistakes let her go through the whole process again with les valuable eggs until she can learn her lesson
I went down to the barn after dark, turned on all the lights, and handed out treats. (I needed some ME time) Julia got off the the eggs to get a sip of water and stretch. I quickly checked a couple of the eggs again with an LED flashlight this time. At least 2 are developing veins, the blue eggs (Isabel's, YAY!), Julia came back over and settled herself on the eggs. So, I think all is well. I wasn't really expecting much, just hoping she'd do her thing. I finally have all my hens vents colored so hopefully I will know who is throwing the chicks with the curved beaks soon. Hubby bought me a new INCUBATOR for VALENTINE's DAY. I almost cried, it was funny, he knows how frustrated I have been because I only have 1 small incubator and issues with my chicks. It was sweet, he knows what I like. He's a good egg.

I found an pic of Isabel before she went into the breeding pen! She doesn't look like this now.

Hoping for more babies just like her.

She is so lovely!
Icelynn lives up to her name in this shot. Beautiful!
I agree. Beautiful picture!

Thank you!

Thank you!

No, she is still in the house with me. I was hoping another baby would hatch and I could give her a companion but that hasn't happened yet. I did find two eggs kicked out of the nest that had pipped and quit. There should be some hatching soon though I hope!
If I have a lone chick I give it a feather duster til I have another chick for a companion...they will snuggle up under it like it is a momma bird!

just back from the Eastern Silkie Nationals at Newnan GA...wow what a show! Soooooo many amazing birds...over 200 silkies...and everyone a true show bird...there was not one bird you wouldn't be excited to own...

all the big names were there and Shorty took BB with a white hen AND Champion Featherleg. RB was a white pullet (sorry but i forget people's names)...what was crazy was that there were so many silkies that were stunning and they didn't even place because of so much competition...everyone who showed should be very proud of their silkies...I only showed one blue pullet and she came 1st but not BV or RV..two amazing blue hens took those...

This splash won 3rd best silkie overall...

pretty cool

This white hen came 5th overall...

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to all the winners! And thank you so much for the pix...I was thinking about the show all day and wishing I could be there

Your pix are much appreciated!

It was fun to go to Newnan! This was our first year showing so it was all a new experience for me. Got a gorgeous 3 month old Bobbi Porto roo (she is lovely!) We didn't place in the white Pullets which was the only category we entered. Next year I think we will take more than one bird.

I hear ya, I like my blue.

The snow makes her blue come out very nicely... She is beautiful!
Thank you!

And she doesn't peep all the time? What a good chick. I am sure she will get some new buddies

I am glad you decided to keep the eggs!

What a great idea! Last time I had only one chick hatched and she was peeping 24/7. I went and got her a friend. If it happens again, I will definitely use a feather duster (I will have a good excuse not dust the house lol)

Even though she didn't place, I am sure you had fun. 200 silkies that is a lot of competition!
