Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Newnan was a blast!! My black pullet didn't place but she was at least judged. My new blue pullet took third :D (out of 18 total blues!!) and I bought a beautiful little splash pullet from Bobbie Porto. Congrats to all the winners!!! What a wonderful show and experience!

It was a very fun day and of course so many whites and blacks...I couldn't even tell any of them apart they were all so great I don't know how the judge did it and kept them all straight...

It took him over 5 hours just to do two rows of feather legs...

And what about the sale/swap meet...it was huge and even more birds out there to buy and sell...all the top breeders had things to sell and there were plenty of beautiful silkies for sale...

I was good and only came home with one new bird...a black mottled Cochin cockeral from Judy Gantt to go with my blue mottled pullet... :D

I am planning to breed BBS and am hatching eggs from different breeders to get started. I purchased eggs that have some colors I will not be using so plan to sell the chicks that I do not need. Is there any advantage to keeping whites if they are typie? I am not sure but I thought I read you can breed white cocks with colored females?

just back from the Eastern Silkie Nationals at Newnan GA...wow what a show! Soooooo many amazing birds...over 200 silkies...and everyone a true show bird...there was not one bird you wouldn't be excited to own...

all the big names were there and Shorty took BB with a white hen AND Champion Featherleg. RB was a white pullet (sorry but i forget people's names)...what was crazy was that there were so many silkies that were stunning and they didn't even place because of so much competition...everyone who showed should be very proud of their silkies...I only showed one blue pullet and she came 1st but not BV or RV..two amazing blue hens took those...

This splash won 3rd best silkie overall...

pretty cool

This white hen came 5th overall...

Thank you so much for sharing with those of us who couldn't be there. I bet you were ecstatic to win 1st place with all that competition! That splash roo is soooo gorgeous!

Congratulations! I would be happy with third in all that competition! Adorable splash!
I thought it was interesting that the judges had changed the cards to read "self blue" instead of lavender (if a Silkie had been entered as Lavender). Porcelain was "self blue creme".
I don't care what they call "porcelain" just wish they'd settle on a name!

Did they ever find the missing paint Silkie of Judys? I sure hope they find her. Missing a silkie from a large show is pretty scary.
LL

I guess it was stolen out of her trailer..how horrible

Thanks! I am beyond happy! She wasn't looking her best either (couldn't get rid of some pin feathers on her head), so I can't imagine what might have happened I she was!
