Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

That was my fault. I use tree wood for roosts. One time I forgot to treat it before putting it in the coop and a month later I had a mess.

How do you treat tree wood? I used a tree branch in my coop and now I'm worried!!

Thanks.

Ok so now in starting to get paranoid about mites. Is there a good way to prevent getting them? Like using frontline and that dust (don't remember the name)? I only have three girls that literally live miles from the nearest chicken and the only time they see another chicken is at shows.
Wild birds can also have mites an spread it to your birds. I actually moved my wild bird feeders away from the coops. I was told by another breeder that Ivomec Injectable can be put in the waterers 1cc per gallon. Ivomec Injectable can also be put directly on the birds..a drop or 2. This breeder told me that you can use Ivomec Injectable in the waters every 6 months or so, she said she's never had a problem and she has ALOT of birds. I did these things in addition to dusting with Sevin Dust, when I had my infestation last year. I swore like a sailor during every bit of treatment of that infestation. I have also read that feeding the birds garlic or garlic powder will prevent mites. Apparently, the mites dislike the garlic "flavor".

Sevin will NOT kill Northern Fowl mites. I have a resident family of wrens in my main coop. Mama and 5 babies are spending the winter under cover in a "See Rock City" house. They get dusted right along with my Orps. The wrens are worth their weight in gold for fly and mosquito protection, so I take care of them.

You must get on a 6 week program of dusting/ spraying , especially if you are showing.Permethrin dust and spray does the trick. Garlic does not. Liquid permethrin sprayed in the coops works quickly. Dust your birds when you leave a show with permethrin dust.

Thank you. Where is a good place to purchase these things?

Thanks! Sorry meant to reply to you as well in the last post!

The only product that killed my red mites and other bugs has been Frontline.
By the way, I checked my sick girl (with her skin problem) and after applying Frontline, she seems to look better

. I am going to bath her tomorrow and get rid of all of the dead skin (I heard the eggs live in the dead skin) and hopefully she will continue to improve. I still don't know if it was mites (I never saw any bugs on her) but whatever it was destroyed her skin and feathers. It took me months to find something useful. She has crust all over her face (not the body), it even attacked her eyelids and she lost all her feathers in her neck, throat, face and half her crest. It is going to take her months or even more to look what she used to, but I am just glad I didn't give up on her.

Hopefully it will only take 6 weeks, that is how long it takes new feathers to grow in as long as her folicles aren't damaged.

Not meant to be argumentative. Just stating an opinion. Over 50 years in show poultry have taught me a thing or two. For those showing light colored Silkies...If you want clean feet, put TALCUM powder on the bottoms of the feet as soon as they are dry. Do NOT use cornstarch, or you will have a mess. You can blow out the powder just before judging. It worked for me !You can see some rather decent Silkies on my page.

Trust me I don't mind at all!!!
