Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

They're cute! I don't see anything that screams cockerel at this point. No worries on the FF crests, mine look exactly the same ;) I try to take pictures on good days :p

Ok, I'm hoping this is the right spot to post this. If not, let me know and point me in the right direction. :)

I have an existing BBS flock (composed currently of only BB). I am getting a porcelain (clean neck) NN/showgirl roo this weekend. My plan is to locate a few porcelain or Lav hens to add in with him. In the meantime I will probably add him with my BBS group so he's not lonely. Now, if I understand genetics right (which is a crapshoot sometimes) the offspring would just be bowtie BBS but they'd be split for lav right? Am I missing a possible color outcome or wrong in my assumptions?

Thanks!!!

My question is what variety are you wanting to produce at the end of a breeding regimen?

secondly, genetics is not a crapshoot because it is based on the laws of probabilities and laws governing the inheritance of genes, etc. It may seem that way at times because chicken genetics is complicated.

No no, I didn't mean that genetics was a crapshoot, I meant my understanding of it! Every time I think I have it down there is another aspect I learn or didn't consider. Lol

My end game is BBS, lavender and porcelain. Showgirl and Silkie. Is just a slow, work in progress. I'm trying to add in more color variety now. I wouldn't mind, just for fun, playing with color, but my focus is on the above.

I am only talking about temporarily housing them together anyway until I find a porcelain hen. I was looking for both but found the roo first. I just don't like housing birds together without knowing the end result of any breeding and if it's a combination that will produce something that will better my flock or at least not damage it.

He was already isolated for a while before I got him, and hate the idea of him alone for the time it takes me to find the right mates for him.

There was a thread here somewhere that I read where they were discussing pairing porcelain with BBS and it was stated numerous times that that pairing would produce basically BBS with a lav copy. I can't find it right now, but also saw these while looking. Is this incorrect? Is it just blue you should avoid?

Okay. So I just got my very first silkies. And I'm a newbie here... I didn't realize there was a difference between feed store birds quality and the quality of breeders' birds. Anywho... These silkies came from the feed store- I've been doing research on what makes a show quality silkie. I know he's young... But are these good qualities so far?

He holds his wings horizontally- they don't slant downward.

Okay- to me, this looks like good spacing in his toes.

He has feathers all the way down his middle toe and the outside of his leg

And I was a little confused by the 5th toe placement.... It said above and longer that the 4th toe and that it should curl upward

So I guess what I'm asking... Are these good qualities? I know the other qualities won't be able to be determined until he gets older... Like the length of his back, his top knot/crest, and the amount of hard feathers, etc.

These two made their first venture out to free range yesterday. They were having fun with it :) I'm pretty sure they're both boys at this point. I can't be positive of course though. They are about 12-13 weeks old now.

I have 9 bearded Silkie eggs in the bator that were shipped from Florida (to PA) that are due next week. Every one is developing. I'm really excited to see what i get since they're random colors.

Looks like a nice little chick to me! Really the only thing you'd check at this point would be the correct number of toes (some people aren't picky about placement, others are) and the right skin color. Everything else, like wing placement, comb, ECT, can't be assessed until they've grown a bit and completed all of their juvenile molts :)
