Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

just got home from Michigan Poultry Fanciers show in Birchrun MI http://fowlfest.org/
was great show was so glad there where more silkies and showgirls entered then there has in many years last year i think there was only 3 silkies 5 showgirls this year there was probly 15 silkies and 6 or 7 showgirls i also met some my FB and BYC freinds i got best of verity in showgirls with my buff

I am also a newbie. I have a splash roo that I got from another member, a buff and white hens and a partrigde whose sex is yet to be determined. The white I have is an adoptee who will not be in any breeding program, she is not quality. I do need to purchase some eggs or pairs of silkies. I am taking my time though so I can research the breed and learn as much as possible before going whole hog. The info here is great! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Welcome, Cathy! You're starting out right.

hang in there! Ask them how long they've been breeding and perfecting their line! Don't worry, you'll get there too with careful culling! :)

ETA-- have a plan and stick with it-- know what you are wanting to accomplish each time you breed. :)
Love that ETA!!

Congrats, Jessy! Do you have a picture of her? Sounds like you had a great time. :)

yes, I love it too-- because I have to keep reminding myself what I'm trying to accomplish and not just breed for the sake of breeding.

So I also just got back from my show, there were SO many silkies! Of course they judged us last too

. Hachi didn't do as well as hoped, she got 4th out of 5 splash pullets, and the 5th one only got that because her whole face and crest was wet (this pullet won best of breed at the hopkinton fair). I wanted to pick his brain after the show as to why he chose another pullet over Hachi because the 3rd place pullet's wings were splayed outward. The 1st place pullet was very dark as well, I posted pictures of both of them. Of course, the ones I noticed that placed highest were the ones with "bonnet" crests

I don't get it... Nori got 1st and a ribbon

, but that's because she was the only one of ehr variety haha she lost to the one other AOV for best AOV, probably because she had more crest to her, ALSO a bonnet

. All in all it was fun, I met a few silkie people.
