Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

He IS a striking bird, but just WHERE does he fit in the standard ? Silkie people please remember that you are breeding for type first, and color second. Without BOTH, you will just have pretty yard ornaments.
he would work well to darken up some the light splash, i love his color

Splash is a double copy of the Blue gene (Bl/Bl). Birds that express blue are a single copy. I thought you said the bird was out of "splash parents" which does make poor quality blue or too dark splash a very real possibility. (And that's very much what it looks like to me.)
splash to splash equals splash that it

Genetically, "splash" is 2 copies of the Bl (blue) gene. That's the science. And splash can express in MANY different ways - including looking like that bird does. It really isn't complicated. Not sure what else to say!!!

No way to know what the breeder did with shipped eggs. They can say one thing, and something else actually happened. That "splash" does not look like any splash I have seen-- it looks like it's reversed out! Mottled-- and I think Sonoran is working on that project-- would love to hear what she says about that bird. I would not call it splash. Very interesting, though!! Otherwise, a beautiful bird.

very true.

Is this picture washed out at all? This is where you would want to breed back to black or a very dark blue to bring the washed out color back. She is splash, but just needing correct breeding to get correct color brought back in on chicks. Pretty girl, though. I would use her on one of my blue cockerels that look black.

I've been gone and missed a lot! I got all caught up reading everything. I had a pretty bad car wreck last Saturday, totaled out my minivan and was transported to the hospital with neck, back, wrist, and leg injuries. Sigh. I'm alive, though! LOL An idiot made a U turn right off the highway in front of me and shot across the highway right in front of me and I had no time to stop or get out of his way even though I made evasive actions and swerved hard to try to miss him. I'm trying to figure out a way to get to Eastern Nationals still this weekend!! Eeeks! I was going to wash birds today, but don't know if I'm up to it.

Thank God you are okay!!! How terrifying!! I know how much you were looking forward to the show. I so hope you are able to go.

Many times during a double show (probably most of the time), the birds receive different placements from the different judges for each show. It is not all that common for the same bird to win both shows; it occasionally happens, but not as much as you might think it could..

I thought your splash roo was a beautiful color and much better than mine...as mine is a dark splash roo...although he is very gentle and round like a soccer ball...lol sorry these are taken with my phone quickly this afternoon after I saw you put your beautiful roo up....

Should you be looking for a light colored spalsh or dark? after 'type' that is...
I have two light splash girls that I am going to try and breed him with and see....
Looks more like blue than splash.

Quote: Cuckoo is essentially "messy barred." Not grey, but black & white messy stripes. (Think of it as being like black crayon stripes on a white bird. (The reality is that the stripes are white, but lets not get that much into technical detail when talking appearance.)
