Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

You have to make arrangements in advance with the US post office at the border town you want to work with and then use that - and you do have to have a passport to get across to pick them up. You also have to make sure that the veterinarian is available at the border crossing when you intend to bring them back so your paperwork can be inspected. Usually have to pay for that service as well. Makes for some VERY expensive chicks.

That's what I've been told.

I'd rather get Ameraucanas in Canada, but I am interested in importing some quality Houdans. I need some better colour in my own. Mottling is tough to work with!

Quote: It's too bad you couldn't go in on it with someone else wanting Ameraucanas or Houdans and share the expense of the shipping and border inspection. There has been some discussion of this on the Faverolle thread because the gene pool is pretty small with the favs. But they would have to be imported from France. It was astronomically expensive! $2000! And I am not sure that included the cost of the birds.

The other issue with importing birds from "across the pond" is health. I have friends that imported birds from Ireland. They suffered from serious shipping stress and then proceeded to become infected with every disease known to poultry on this continent because their immune systems were completely unprepared. Not an easy proposition!

Before we get off the color blue, here's my 5 month old cockerel. I'm really liking this boy. What do you all think? I'm sure his color will even out....

That is a most beautiful bird..I would keep him....his color is my idea of a blue roo to the Standard description
