Hi all! Newbie to forums and chickens! 3 silkies 11 months old, one went broody first time, determined so I got her hatching eggs online, day 20 and one of the other silkies(the timid of the 3 has joined her at night on day 20?) I did Lockdown but didn’t block door very well on day 18. Is she ok to stay with broody, the dominant of the 3 is alone and has wry? Neck poor thing. Hope we get a chick or 2 do I have to have her on lockdown as she wanted to go poop eat outside in morning as usual on day 19? Thanks in advance for any replies

Hello and welcome to BYC. I hope that the peeps with the requisite experience chime in to provide you with the best advice soon :)

:welcome
Co-brooding is perfectly okay, and seems to work out better. Mom can enjoy more dust bathing, and aunt can keep them safe. Dad will usually watch them too.
Good luck with your hatch!
Thankyou I was going to put broody and any chicks with other 2 once all hatched anyway, just hope chicks will be ok with the clumsy dominant one with the wry neck

I would let the broody make the decision of what to do, stay or go out and eat, poop, etc. I did that and mine did just fine. She knew how to do the whole thing. What are you doing for the chicken with wry neck? If you don't know how to treat that, do ask in the Emergencies Forum.

Hi Valerie. I left coup open and she is still going out in morning, the hen that slept with her laid an egg there, day 20/21 can't here any chirps or movement Yet.. I have been giving the sick silkie vitamin e mixed on pine nuts, any way to massage neck? What has selenium as I read that will help absorb vit, ta for emergency forum link

I'm not sure on the correct treatment for wry neck. If you post the question in the ER forum, someone will come on and give you advice.

Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

Lock down is for incubators and not for broody's. ;)

I disagree about letting a co broody join in and would break the new one now. It's a personal choice. The one who just started sitting won't be at the same hormone level and such. Let her keep laying eggs and maybe SHE can be the next gal allowed to brood.

Did you candle your eggs? How far were they shipped? Do you have a plan for roosters? What are you feeding?

Happy hatching! :fl:jumpy:jumpy

☺️Ahh I see no lockdown then. I didn’t candle them. But did have a quick look this morning. Thought I saw a bit of cracked egg from inside of one. eggs were shipped from about an hour or two away. I’d like to keep a rooster and someone I know has lots of chickens so she said she would have any others. They’re free range and have layer pellets but I will have to feed them all chick food if they are all fine together, will they still lay as many eggs? And think I read something about oyster shells? Yes I will break other one if needed. Sites great and can’t believe how many questions keep popping into my head. I feel a bit chicken obsessed at the moment
