{Silkie Crossbreed Breeding Project Idea}

When speaking about culling, it doesn't necessarily mean "kill". It just means to rehome or sell or remove from the breeding flock. Often the word "cull" is used in place of "kill" though.

I just did a cross of a splash Silkie cock and a Rhode Island Red hen. I have 5 chicks, all were born blue, all have black skin, 4 have 5 toes on each foot, the other has only 4 on each foot. None have single combs, all are bearded and muffed. Too soon to tell about crests. All have feathered legs.
Now at about 2 weeks old, they are all regular feathered, and some are getting in red highlights around their face, and some are getting patterned feathers like a RIR does (their juvenile plumage).

As silkiechicken said, cull is a broad term. It can mean kill, remove from the flock(in any way- sold, given away etc).. or simply eaten. It's very much an inevitable reality of raising livestock and poultry, especially in programs where there is a specific goal.Even for the purest of pure breds, a LOT of culling goes on so it's nowhere restricted to crosses, new breeds etc. It's not waste if the culls are eaten or given/sold for eating purposes-they're all equally delicious.

You'll have fun.

I think you may end up with some birds that look more or less like Sultans.

Ah yes, it should be relatively easy, as many if not all the genes you apparently want are dominant or semi-dominant(except for silky).

You do know to keep and breed a frizzled bird each generation if you also want some Sultan looking birds to be frizzled?

Thanks Silkiechicken:) I was just thinking what a shame it'd be to have an incubator full of eggs, and after awaiting thier arrival as chicks that'd be a waste to just 'kill' the chicks after a day or so when the traits someone wasn't looking for were present in the chick's looks.... I've read alot of people here say 'rehome' so I assumed cull's meaning was meant as kill. I Totally agree if an animal is used for meat it's being used for something so that's good & not a waste. But as a chick if it's unwanted I just though maybe it could be used by someone instead of just killing it. Can you tell I'm new?

Sorry about that, but thanks for the clarifying info.

My silkie hens are sitting on eggs, three of them are from my lone EE, crossed with my white silkie roo. Does anyone know what the resulting chicken will look like?
Better yet, anyone have pics? I'm just trying to decide whether to let these hatch or not.........
Thanks!

Just ran up on this post and wanted to add, you guys are using (FF) and (ff) but I dont know where you got that.

The gene is known as "hookless" and is written (HH)

Just wanted to let you know.

I have done a few little crossing with Silkie and longtails but the only thing I wanted was the black skin and everything else basically like a yokohama.
