Silkie Gender Help Needed.

Thank you everyone. I guess I am in denial that Pearl-Girl is "not so much".

I am sorry if you see another post I just did this afternoon asking for similar information on telling the pullets from the roos. I still want her to be a her and not a him.

I will need to re-home if she starts crowing. Lately, her little chirpy song has sounded deeper and deeper. Oh, well.

Does anyone near N. Alabama/S. Tenn. need a really fluffy silkie?

Compared to my 4 I would say roo. None of my girls had any comb at that age and actually still do not at 22 weeks. The boys on the other hand do.

Thank you again. I am dealing with the reality that Pearl-Girl will have to go. I talked it over with our children and they are upset because she/he is such a sweet heart.

I never understood why some BYC'ers would have a chicken that lives in their house, but with Pearl-Girl I can see why. She/he literally perches on the edge of her brooder tub all day long. But I take enough grief from family and friends about owning our chickens I would never live through having an indoor chicken. LOL.

I also have to say rooster.

Hmm, from looking at those streamers I'd say roo. But I have one right now that I was convinced was a roo from the streamers, but is now growing in to look like a hen topknot. I'm waiting to see what he/she has in store in the next 2 weeks, where I'm sure he/she will try as hard as possible to make me change my mind every other day. 15 weeks is still a bit iffy.

Very much so--hold off and she how Pearl develops. If someone is giving you grief over having a chicken, return the favor about something they have/do. IF you enjoy your birds, whose business is it that you have them?

Yeah - what Sonoran said! Its nobody's business! My friends and family all thought I was crazy for having chickens, but when I started getting eggs, they all wanted them!!!

This one looks like a roo to me right now, but you never know - I've had birds I thought were roos lay eggs, and birds I thought were hens ended up crowing. ESPECIALLY silkies. I say waiting is probably your best bet.

OK, you convinced me. I know it will be worth waiting for because she/he is soooo pretty. My big fear is crowing. On our very first rooster we waited until it crowed and then found a home for it. It was a lovely salmon faverolle cockeral and it's new owner was thrilled with it - because they are such pretty roosters and good guardians of the flock, gentle too. Every other time we ended up with roosters we rehomed them before they crowed just to be safe.

I guess we will just have to test our neighbor's tolerance for crowing just one more time. I may not have to wait long as I am sensing an octave change on the little chirpy song that Pearly-G sings. LOL

Thanks guys.
Big J

With the streamers, the comb, im pretty sure its a he. I cant have roos either so i feel for you. As far as wattles go, people are saying on here i dont see no wattles so must be a rooster, well a SQ rooster you arnt suppose to see any wattles, especially at 15 weeks. I bet its a rooster and im sorry.
