The Silkie 'Grow-Along' Thread!


I always see (and have done) 'hatch-along' threads but I haven't come across one for following how your chicks grow.

This thread is mainly so I can keep a record myself but anyone else is free to post updates on their own chicks as they grow.

Of course, photos in this thread are more than welcome!

Around 4 weeks ago I hatched my first batch of Silkies from my own flock.

Out of 16, I've decided to keep 2 pure whites as grow outs to see how they develop.

I had to decide at week 3 due to people wanting to buy them.

Let's hope I made a good choice...

Chick One:
This chick was the first to hatch out of my batch and I was surprised that when it hatched, it was white. All the other whites hatched yellow/orange.

My original thoughts was that this little one is a male but now comparing 'him' to the siblings, I'm not sure.

Chick Two:
I hope I have the right first photos but I believe this was the most poofy of all the chicks and still is!

I genuinely hope this little one is a female but we will see as it grows.

It's a very quiet little chick but is feathering the quickest crest wise and is already beginning to get the start of blue earlobes!

As always, name suggestions are welcome...and needed!

Otherwise they'll end up called something like Dan and Druff

Feel free to take a wild guess on the sex. Everyone's guess is a good as mine especially this early!

Particularly Opal as it's my favourite stone. That's definitely in with a chance, Thankyou

Growth Update:

My two growout chicks are getting big now! They're 5 weeks old

Their crests seem to be coming in nicely as is the rest of their feathers.

Still fingers crossed for both being female as somone wants one off me if they are.

I also decided to keep another chick which is a partridge. I just loved how light it's chest was. I know that will change but I couldn't resist it!

First photo is at one week old, the rest is at two weeks old.

Some more 5 week old photos!

These were actually taken a few days ago so their crests are actually bigger than this now.

Pretty much the bigger chick on the photos is Chick two, the other chick one.

I'm starting to think chick two is male due to the sise difference but it's crest is getting huge not like the other male silkies I hatched. We will see...
