I had five young Silkie hens and was noticing today that one is much smaller than the others. I picked her up and noticed her one eye is super swollen! No nasal discharge. She is eating and drinking just fine and out and about with the rest of the flock. No other apparent injury to her nor the other chickens. What could be going on and what should I do?

Welcome To BYC

I would first try flushing with saline, see if there's any debris or pus in the eye. Apply an eye ointment like Terramycin in the eye. Hopefully the infection is from getting a poke to the eye or some type of debris in it.

Does she have any signs of lesions inside the beak (yellow pasty material)?

If you need to, you may need to press around the eye to see if there's any pus that needs to be removed.

The mouth is totally clear. I cleaned the eye and applied pressure after watching a few videos on expelling pus in Coryza. Nothing came out except a very minimal amount of milky fluid. I’ve applied an antibiotic ointment, I live on a tropical island and am somewhat limited on what I have access to. Im also not sure quite how much pressure to apply to the eye? The outlet is pretty small….

Is there any bubbles or pus in the eye? It could besomething in the eye or a peck that is causing infection, but some respiratory diseases such as MG or coryza can cause a swollen eye. Get some saline eye wash and flush the eye 2-3 times a day, and follow that with Terramycin eye ointment or plain Neosporin ointment for a week or so. If sneezing or gasping occurs, I would start an antibiotic such as Tylan or Tylosin.
