Silkie Questions

Sorry Cara. I knew you were on here, but for the life of me I couldn't remember your screen name.

blaundee-You can get a lot of information online, both here and at the club sites linked in previous posts. You can also get a copy of the Standards of Perfection. Try the library if you don't want to buy one just yet. Even if your local library doesn't have one, they can maybe get one through an inter library loan. There are also some breed/class specific books also at the links. As 1997 said, you can also ask specifics here.

Sorry you can't find any shows near you, but the advice is sound. The breeders are there, the birds are there, judges are there and there is a lot of time to fill while the judges are working. I've yet to find someone who wasn't willing to talk and best of all they often can show you firsthand rather than just tell you things.

One show really can make a big difference, but you'll also learn more at each one. We went to the Sedalia, MO show in the spring, not to show, just to observe and learn. It was 9 hours round trip, but well worth it. We met with 2 amazing Silkie breeders and learned a ton of stuff. A couple months later, when a pair of my daughters birds were being evaluated and the judge was talking about their level of shredding, I knew exactly what he was talking about. I only knew because of that show and a breeder who was nice enough to take the time to actually take a bird out and show me.

At our last show, we had to miss the actual judging, but I did get to speak with the judge after. According to several people who were there during the bantam judging, the judge spent a lot of time with my DDs Silkies. Came back multiple times. Even took her pullet to another cage. She did get all the top awards for Silkies, but not the RV or GR CH Bantam. The judge told me it was a really tough call, but in the end, he prefers vaulted skulls. At Sedalia, which was a double show, there was a light blue and a dark blue. One judge proffered the light, one the dark. Thanks to the breeder, I and more importantly my DD then better understood about judges preferences and the importance of bringing as many variations as you can especially if you don't know the judges preferences.

Shows can go on for hours with lots of wait time. You can find out about selecting which birds for breeding or showing and why, how to prep them, things to bring, how to enter, how the show process itself works, what a judge liked or disliked and why, network with other breeders/exhibitors, purchase birds...... For a small cage fee you can enter some of your own and get evaluations from a judge and other breeders. It's like a crash course in your chosen breed.

Emails can be missed, go to junk mail, be lost amongst the families, jobs, livestock and other demands upon the breeders time. They might not be much for typed communication. At a one day show however, they're likely to be around and often nearby their birds. You just have to be proactive and ask. A polite question or two and you'll find people who'll talk chickens with you all day long. Be prepared to take notes.

Hello Emily,
I do try and respond to people, but life can be very busy at times, lol
Mentoring, we all need people for sound boards, I tend to talk to George M, Eric K, Gerald C and Mark P. Currently I am helping Chad Peets in FL get his program off the ground and spent 2 hours on the phone talking silkie yesterday.
Yet 2 days ago I spent the same amount of time talking to George about my program getting advice.
Honestly I do not ship my pet quality, they are sold locally as yard pets. The white cockerel I have is a pet and not for a breeding program. Their are to many other breeders who will have a better quality roos that is worth the cost of shipping. Two breeders coops I have been in and can say have good stock is Cara in CO and Amy P. in MN. They are both VERY nice ladies, have reasonable prices for good stock. I am not familiar with many of the other silkie breeders programs so I cannot recommend what I do not know.
Going to a show is your best bet for any of us showing you live and in person with the birds at the show. Reading & pictures are ok, but my best experiences are with going over Georges stock with him and when we went through Don Jones & KDs birds at Crossroads. Visit a breeder if you can, its a bit like hitting the candy store, lol! Feel free to email me, it may take me a few days to get back to you though.
Honestly get a box of good chicks from one of the show breeders suggested, I do not sell eggs or chicks. Heritage & Show stock are worlds apart, we all started somewhere and it usually was not where we are now, lol We all live & learn.

Connie aka (PremierSilkies) was the nice breeder who taught me about shredding at the show among other things. TY Connie! Finding out that she also knew and had seen Cara's stock firsthand helped assure me of the quality of her stock beyond just some pics on the web.

Sundy aka (CrestedHorizon) was the other breeder who has helped us a lot, both at that show and with mentoring.

They both have amazing birds. We're just getting started and we have 4 birds from Sundy and will be getting 4 more soon. She may still have some for this fall. We'll be looking to get some hatching eggs from Cara when we start hatching again. A bargain last I checked.

To find a local swap, check here on BYC under:Index and then Shows and Swaps. Scan through to find one near you. Alternatively, call your local feed stores and ask if there's a swap they know about. Lastly, I'd go to the Bantam Silkie Club website and find my state's representative (they should know about the swaps or direct you to someone who does). Swaps are informal gatherings of chicken breeders who bring whatever stock they want to sell. It's usually a Sat. or Sun. and you can walk around and talk to them about their particular breed. I have found some very good silkies at the swaps and the prices are usually much lower than an online auction. I've learned more at swaps than anything I read in books (which I have consumed a lot of).

From the listing of silkies you have now, I think it might take you a bit of time to breed 'up' to better quality that will compete successfully in shows. Attend a show or swap and then decide how yours compares to what you eventually want. Then decide how you want to proceed.

I have 28 chickens, one is a 2y/o California White (looks like a leghorn)- the others were hatched on July 4th, I ordered them from a hatchery. 11 Black Australorp pullets, 5 RIR pullets, 1 buff Brahma bantam (thrown in as a box warmer)- I'm pretty sure that one is a cockerel, 7 white Silkies (originally ordered 10, 3 died), And 3 crossbred layerXGame chicks that one of Mom's hens hatched out around the same time- one is pure white and light bodied, one is speckled tan (like a tan barred Rock), and the other one is dark brown barred- the 2 barred ones must be Cukoo Maran crossbreds, since they are the only barred chickens Mom has.

So- 7 White Silkies, they are almost 2 months old. Only 2 of them have feathering on all 5 toes, the others only have it on 3 toes, and one has a crooked beak. Sigh. But they are adorable.

I want to breed show quality birds, and show them, and play around with colors, etc.

I want to mainly focus on Silkies and Cochins and American Game chickens, but also have a variety of birds for pets and laying.

I currently have a 16X8' metal building with a wood floor and doors on each end, with a small door for the chickens to go out into the yard. The yard hasn't been fenced in yet, as we are still trying to decide on how to make the ceiling- can't be open because hawks and owls will eat them. Hubby loves to build things, and we have plans for many more houses and pens.

I live in Lindrith, NM, which is 2 hours northwest of Albuquerque and 2 hours southeast of Farmington and 3 hours east of Gallup. I routinely go to Farmington and Albuquerque for groceries and church services.

Thankfully, I am not the kind who likes the city, as I live in the BOONIES!!! I don't have neighbors! lol (except for mother and father in law)

I DIDN'T KNOW SUCH A THING AS CHICKEN SWAPS EXISTED!!!!!!!!!! What rock have I been under? LOL

I definately don't expect anything to happen overnight!!! LOL I am in the horse business, and it takes at LEAST 5 years before you see the results of what you have created!!!! LOL So the fact that chickens mature so much faster is really appealing, and I'd have chickens ANYWAY, so I may as well learn more about them and have some better goals than just a motley crew of crazy birds!!! LOL

I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who has responded on here! I'm learning SOO much! Talking to some of you here and also corresponding with several of you by email is making me realize that maybe this chicken world isn't so big and scary after all.

I am the type of person who wants to solve a problem overnight and I'm realizing and getting comfortable with the fact that forming a great line is going to be a process--I'm looking forward to seeing the progress and improvements of my birds but I know it will take a while. I think I will try and acquire some really fabulous Silkies from here and there and create my own line.

I would love to get some Silkies from some of you and get to come to your facilities and see some of your amazing show birds. Sunshine Silkies, I've actually just emailed you today. I would love to make a trip down(possibly this month?) and possibly get some chicks from you and get to see what you've created. So far youre the closest breeder I've found and your Silkies on your website are beautiful!

I am so enjoying how nice everyone is and I truly appreciate it.

Sunshine Silkies has beautiful birds and I can highly recommend them! The ones I've gotten have been healthy, beautiful and sweet tempered. Vickie is wonderful to deal with and extremely knowledgable. You couldn't have chosen a better breeder!

I am always glad to answer questions to people who really want to learn. Farmington is a good show, large, not sure how many sikie though since George does not have his birds anymore. I would go but did not have enough vacation time to make the trip, I am doing MN instead this year. I went to Farmington a few years ago. Just e-mail me if you want to ask questions. [email protected]

Connies birds are top notch, which is why I get new breeders from her when I can, but, nothing beats winning a show with a bird you hatched yourself from a pairing you did. MN is the place to be for Silkie this year in October, at least 4 exhibitors and one of the best dang Silkie judges will be there!!!Everyone could learn a lot.

The Farmington Show is the 1srt weekend in November; I think there is one in Denver about a week earlier--Cara probably knows the dates. There is a show in Tucson on Thanksgiving weekend, one in Safford, Az the 1st weekend in January and another in Arizona in February; we're not sure if it will be in Casa Grande again or in Phoenix. There was another New Mexico show in I think October last year--somewhere on the east side of the state; and Shawnee, Oklahoma in December. Most exhibitors travel to get to shows. Very few of us have lots that are nearby. There is also New Mexico's State Fair--not sure when that is.
