Hello everyone,
I have been debating getting rid of my 5 month old silkie rooster. He is not aggressive towards me but with my family and smaller hens. He sneaks behind and then attacks consistently and chances away my sixteen 3 month old hens. Is this behavior going to go away eventually as he matures or is he just an aggressive rooster? I am worried he might hurt my small dog or cats but don’t want to get rid of him if this behavior is temporary.

Is he attacking attacking the hens? Or is he trying to mate and failing horribly? If it’s the latter, then the behavior should get better as he matures.

As far as attacking the family. Have them bring treats with them when they go into the coop. And only give them to him. I’ve had a few aggressive roosters but they would only go after my wife or kids. Until I had them stand their ground, square up with them and offer them treats. He sees you as part of the flock or at least bit a threat. He isn’t sure about your family so he will go into defense mode. They need to show him they aren’t a threat AND they have no interest in his hens. So the treats go to him and not the hens until he calms down.

Thank you so much for your response. I think he was trying to mate with the hens but he was pulling their tail feathers pretty bad. I’ve been keeping them separately, he only does this when they are free ranging.

IDK We have tried the same thing with our rooster and without fail he will just try to jump higher to flog our face.

If they're worried about aggressive behavior, giving treats is really just the last delay before it's the chop chop.

I'm having the same issue with my boy. I've tried everything but this weekend is his time. I can't afford getting an infection due to him attacking me and breaking skin, anymore.

My Buff Silkie Cockerel, Mr. James, went thru this exact phase! He was 5mos old when it all started for him as well …

I decided that I wanted to give him a fair chance to be a good family member to his flock; I’m so happy that I did! — He matured out of his negative behaviors and now he’s such a good guy! He will protect his girls to no end, there’s no doubt!! 👍🏼🐥

I’d say it took him about 3mos, maybe 4mos, to get used to his newly surging testosterone and/or for his hormones to even out. We also used some typical calming techniques, like picking him up and carrying him around for awhile whenever he’d act up, and we put him to bed early one night while the girls got to free range for another hour… Ha! :)

Now— He’s a serious protector over his 5 girls out here on the farm. He always has to know where they are at all times. He tidbits for them at every chance he gets, which I cannot get enough of, it’s so adorable! He will escort them to and from the nesting box when they need to go lay their egg. I even watched him show one of the girls how to sit in the nest when she was singing her “egg song”/laying her very first egg… then, he stayed in there with her the whole time during as well…Awwww!!! (I have live “Coop Cams”, by the way)!

Witching you and yours the Best of Luck!!
Let us know how he does! And, let us know how YOU do too!!! 🤪💜
