Hi everyone, new to the site! I have a 6 month old silkie that I'm still not sure of the sex. She/he has not crowed at all. Is very very sweet and will sot in your lap all day to be petted. Is in the pen with 4 other hens. Said chic has not laid an egg yet either. At what ages do they usually start crowing or laying? This is my first silkie, and I already love it! Not pampered at all..lol Hoping its a hen! I know they are hard to sex till they get older. Just didnt know how older...

Your adorable Silkie has me stumped! On on the fence with that one....I’m surprised you haven’t heard a crow or seen an egg by now! Pullets usually start laying around 18 weeks old.

Are you getting eggs from your other hens??? Just wondering if she knows where to lay. Do you free range? If so, she may have laid eggs outside rather than in the nesting box.

Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

I've had Silkies crow as young as three weeks! My local friend had a rooster who didn't crow until past 18 months old.

I'm going with pullet according to crest shape, wattle size, and lack of mating behavior! :wee

If your lucky she won't be excessively broody either. :)

ETA: All pullets will lay when they are ready... some as late as 9 months or worse. Most my Silkies were laying by about 24 weeks... but this can vary heavily according to time of year hatched, genetics, and even feed.

My other hens are only 9 weeks old, so no, no one is laying right now. Have 2 boxes set up. Mostly everyone is just roosting right now. I only free range in the evenings where I can see them, and then they come back into the coup for the night.

What feed do you feed? Ive been doing the chick starter mixed with 18% scratch, along with grass and greens, and crushed egg shell along with a few meal worm each day. And any other bugs and worms my kids find. Lol
