silkie sexing

I had one that held off till he was 6 months. But he was in with a dominant roo.

I've got a 20 wk rooster who still hasn't started crowing. What's the latest age your roo has crowed?

I know its definitely aroo bc he has long pin feathers on his head and his comb is bump y and starting to turn red.
So I may end up sitting on these little ones for another 2 months or more? I looked it up and they are just shy of 4 months. They may be cute but I'm starting to think they aren't worth the time/space to get them up and running.Unless some roos never really crow a lot. In my flock silence is golden.

Single combs are recessive so both parents have to be carrying the recessive gene to produce offspring that have single combs. The parents may have had walnut combs as part of their phenotype, so the breeder/hatchery can't tell that the parents are carrying the recessive gene until the offspring hatch. It's common with hatchery birds as the hatcheries generally produce quantity, not quality. Single combed silkies will always pass down the single combed gene to their offspring so they should not be bred from. This is one of the problems of buying silkies (or any other breed for that matter) sight unseen from hatcheries as you are not able to choose birds that are true to type.

I have 6 silkies now 4 came from a breeder who just used the silkies and their offspring to pay for their feed for his animals, who are 20 weeks. And 2 that came from a hatchery who are 3 weeks. I do plan on breeding and the 2 I would be using for their colors have the single comb but they are just pets so the comb type doesn't really matter to me.

thanks, the cocker has been with us 2 years now- she was a rescue dog, she loves to watch the chicks in the incubator but we have to keep her away from them- she has a strong prey drive.

Every cocker I had was a rescue (5) and all but 1 had a really strong prey drive. 3 of them would actually kill ducks/birds if they came into the yard. One would even dive in the pool after turtles, snakes and fish.

You would think that my roo being the only guy in the flock would crow already....i can't wait to hear his crow! Flocks not compete with out a rooster crow. I guess I can wait 4 more Weeks ;) he's not going anywhere
