One of my two six-month-old chickens crowed today. I just don't know which one, but the one I've thought of as possibly being female was out in the pen and the one who acts more like a rooster was standing in their little alcove where a rooster couldn't stand up straight to crow without banging his head. Not that chickens can't walk somewhere else, of course, but they're living in the mudroom and I was two rooms away. They both have nice, feminine crests and combs don't really speak to me of male or female. I had a silkie with a comb like PJ's (pictured below) and larger wattles that I was sure was a rooster, but I was getting an extra egg for the amount of hens I thought I had. We found out it was her who way laying when she went broody one day. The one who's bolder and stood and moved like a rooster has started acting more like a hen The other one still acts as timid as always, but will sometimes get brave enough to come close to me and try to eat my shoelaces or peck at my ring.

PJ, the one who's always been more timid and henlike:

Goronzilla, the one who acts more like a rooster:

Sorry some of the pictures are grainy. I've only had this camera a month and I'm still figuring out the settings on it.

Well, tonight while I was adding food to their feeder, Gorgonzilla squatted for me. I scratched Zilla at the base of the tail and PJ came charging towards me, ready to peck. As soon as I made a move towards PJ, he ran back to the sleeping alcove at top speed.

I picked him up, petted him for a bit and he calmed down. I hope he stays sweet because my youngest daughter just loves that chicken -- pets and feeds him. He seems to like her in as much as a chicken likes a human because he not only likes the treats, he'll fall asleep on her lap when she pets him.
