silkie sexing

My roos normally develop them at 15-16 weeks. Is that late? My hens just don't get them at all.

I have a 4-5 week old who is starting to develop some. (I have had my suspicions about it being a roo for two weeks now) "He"is most likely not a pure bred so the timeline might be wonky.

I like the colored silkies!

DD's been wanting a silkie for 3 years now. I finally gave in & allowed her to hatch some. I threatened if any hatched out white, I'd dye them pink. ( I'm not a big fan of white hens.) Anyway, DD took my words to mean that we should get a white silkie & then dye it. So now we have TWO: a black & an ummmm "white" silkie.

BTW- Is it true that at hatch female silkies have a circular head dome & males are more oval? Just wondering.

That black one looks like a hen to me. I think that it's easier to tell gender on silkies based on behavior and body movement /stance. Black one above stands like a hen.

Hey guys my silkie turned out to be a roo. I wanted to keep him anyways but, today he went after my daughter and my sister. I'm new to chicken owning and I don't wanna kill him I'm in central cali if anyone close by wants him he's beautiful. Does anyone have a suggestions on what to do with him?

This is a picture from when he was younger he's black with gold going down his neck and he has a blueish green tint on his wing and tail feathers

You may be able to find him a home via Craigslist. (Although I give away all my male chicks for free, I always put a small price in the post. If you write "Free rooster" you'll get all kinds of crazy responding.)

Our roos are extremely docile. Some go through a testing phase between 8-12 months, but you must evaluate each roo individually, We keep ours in the garage at night. They are very used to being picked up. It's not that they're "lap chickens" but they don't run away or fuss when held. If one seems to be acting like he wants a challenge, we simply pick him up. Not in a mean or rough way. Not upside down. I just pick him up & carry him under my arm for a while. They don't like not being in control, so it's my way of showing them that I'm the boss..... and also that I'm not bully, rival, or threat. I simply won't tolerate them attacking another roo.

We only had one unpredictable roo. He was sent to freezer camp.
