Silkie stalled for 12+ hours--when do I help. Video

Little one is on day 21--which wouldnt worry me, but he/she pipped (externally) at the wrong end, air pocket was at the other end of the egg. Then nothing for more than 12 hours. Finally, I decided to see if I could just open her pip up just a bit. I'm worried, though, about how dry the membrane is now. I dont want to help more, as you can see in the video, there is still fresh blood in the membrane. But the membrane seems very dry now and I'm not sure my best course of action. You cant see it as well as I intended, but her egg tooth/beak is sticking out of the hole and she is breathing fine. Input welcome!

Being pipped on the wrong end requires more time, since it didn’t spend the “usual” 24ish hours inside the air cell. They can usually hatch fine from the wrong end, they just need more time. I personally wouldn’t help more until at least 36 hours from pip.

Exactly! I agree. Plus, if you start helping early there’s really nothing you can do because they are not ready. So you have to keep checking and keep lubing up the membrane and just waiting. I’ve found it easier to not touch them and wait it out and then if they need help go in after the waiting period. Most times wrong end pippers get out on their own. Not always but more often then not. Patience!
