Yes, they are a lot more lively when they can see. As long as you are not planning to show them in the next several months. I use blunt nose sizzors. Sometimes the muff feathers are the worst culprits!

so you can't show them if they have hair cuts?

No you can't show with hair cuts, if a judge notices any cut feathers, you can be DQ'ed - if its very minor and barely noticable a judge may be lenient and just dock points.

To keep hair out of the way some use hair tape, pony tails, I've heard of making a food based hair gel for silkies with gelatin mix to keep the muffs and crest out of the eyes, and then just wash out a week or so before a show. I will try to find the recipe for the gelatin hair mix if you want it. lol

I tried dollar store hair gel on the muffs and it didn't work. I'd like that recipe too!!

Okay I found it! Use tape hold the crest up, and for the muffs, mix unflavored gelatin and some warm water, only do a small bit at a time, apply quickly, rub down in the direction you want it to lay. I would say personally I would try it first on a non-show bird and see how well and easy it will wash out with some soap and warm water BEFORE putting it on a show bird - just in case. any annoying bits go ahead and pluck like you would your eyebrows. hair tape cut to the right size strips in not too vibrant colors or no-metal pony tail holders for kids work best for the crest.

for the crest I would honestly do a handband type deal with hair tape, a bit wider in the front, slimmer on the sides and back, connect/over lap in the back, this will pull it up out of the face, the smaller strips on the sides can be closer to the eyes without too much bothering - do not do it tight at all, very loose as to not aggravate them to want to shake and scratch it off for being an annoyance.

Lexi won BB with her Buff pullet from Sundown Silkies today at the Boston Poultry Expo! She got first with her Splash pullet who just won Res. Champ. Featherleg a couple weeks ago...it is funny how different judges give such different results
