Silkie thread!

Did you just get them? I would give them a bath in a dog/cat flea shampoo. Make sure you get the crest. the problem with silkies is that the critters hide in the crest, which is easy to miss when checking for bugs. especially if your eyes are a bit on the older side. Hubby washed up some birds for me once and missed the crest, he looked and said they were fine. I went back over the birds and you guessed it, little friends in there! Especially if the birds live outside, they all have bugs! So give the breeder the benefit, I'm sure it was an oversite. One thing to remember for everyone, just because the weather has gotten cold, you still need to look the birds over. I have found critters on birds in January before. Good time of year to give everyone a good dusting also. Good luck with your new birds!

I've never given my a dusting before. I dont see any mites. Do I give them a dusting every year? Also.... how and with what?

you can use seven dust, or I use frontline SPRAY one squirt per bird and re treat in 7-10 days. on the way to and from swaps or shows mine are in cat carriers with shavings that have seven in it. most birds will dust themselves with seven if you put it in their dust bath area but silkies sometime need extra help.

Oh, this was way back in the spring. We've taken care of the issue since then.

But I like to use it as a universal example: anyone is prone to mites.

As far as touching on this post, the only thing that took care of the buggies was Sevin. We tried various human-lice shampoos in combos with DE and Permethryn dust. None of those worked. Sevin saved the day, wiping out all of them within a few weeks. Not before they spread to my entire laying flock (Over 25 birds? Oh, that was TONS of fun...

...) but we got 'em.

I second the everyone-should-start-watching-for-buggies thing. Mites come out when it's cold.

Just a bit of caution with this spray. If the bird is molting don't us it. The quills are a line direct to the blood stream. The spray can go straight into the birds blood. It will cause it to be poisoned. Birds will be blinded and will cause a paralysis. Trust me I have had this happen to a lovely little GLW bantam, since then, they only get this spray when not in molt.

Do you mean molting to any degree or full molt where they are just covered with quills? I have used it on molting birds lots times without any problems. Just wondering.

Hello everyone! I'm kind of new here. We just got a pair of silkies a couple of months ago. I didn't even know they existed before, but I just LOVE them! They are so cute and nice! It is a very pleasant change over our previous rooster experience. Anyway, my daughter is interested in showing. Since I don't know anything about the breed, I have no idea if ours are show quality or if we should find more. I don't mean major show, just small time local stuff. Here's a pic:

Any advice? Thanks!
