Silkie thread!

Finally I have chicks from my flock instead of getting eggs elsewhere.

There are 2 partrige chicks and one I don't know which hen it came from but it looks to be buff with some lavender or blue. They aren't fluffed up yet so it's still hard to tell. I'll post pics when they are all done hatching and fluffed up. Two of them have vaulted skulls from what I can tell. The roo is a very handsome black lavender split for all the chicks. There is another partrige egg and a polish/silkie mix. I want a frizzle roo so I can put that hen with him. I have 2 frizle chicks now but don't know the sex yet.

Hopefully this spring i'll be able to put her with one of them.

I need sombody to come and smack my hands to keep me out of the hatcher.

Probally a stupid question, but if my silkie isn't laying eggs and hasn't since we got her (it's been like a month) it's a good chance she isn't going to lay me any?

hi 5pinkarrows, how many toes do the silkies have they need 5 , your roo is non bearded

most you see are bearded. he could use more fluff in his cushion but he just maybe molting. silkies are alot of fun this is one of my baby girls at 3 months

Muddyhorse--thanks for your reply. I don't think he is molting. He is pretty dirty in the pic since he had just been rolling in some black dirt, and a bath might fluff him a little. Is the cushion the rear end? But, probably not enough. He has 5 toes, though! The hen has 4 on one foot and 5 on the other. HAHA!! Never noticed that before. I guess she's out. I don't know anything about the beards. Such a rookie! I'll have to check that out.

Your chick is BEAUTIFUL!!!! I guess I better start looking for some like that. Maybe I can get one or two when we go to Phoenix in the summer since there isn't much to choose from where we are. I just got my silkies from a friend when coyotes got all but one of my chickens. She was looking for a home for them because her other chickens were picking on them and her husband wasn't liking the rooster crows.

Again, thank you SO much for the advice. I know my ignorance is probably frustrating to experienced silkie owners.

Just a bit of caution with this spray. If the bird is molting don't us it. The quills are a line direct to the blood stream. The spray can go straight into the birds blood. It will cause it to be poisoned. Birds will be blinded and will cause a paralysis. Trust me I have had this happen to a lovely little GLW bantam, since then, they only get this spray when not in molt.

Do you mean molting to any degree or full molt where they are just covered with quills? I have used it on molting birds lots times without any problems. Just wondering.

The bird in question was only halfway through the molt. He had exposed quills on his neck & back. He was healthy before spraying, then about 4 hours afterward, was paralized and could not see. I was able to feed & water him by putting the food up to him. I put him down 2 days later when he got no better. Lesson learned, a lot of people make the same mistake "dipping" their cats for fleas, they to will have reactions & die from the chemicals in a flea spray/shampoo.

It often takes the hens a while to get acclimated to their new home. How old is she? Most silkies don't lay until at least 6 months...many take up to 8 months, especially this time of year. Is she molting? If so, it may be some time before she starts laying again.

Give her some more time....

I was curious about the same thing. I just bought a white pair at the auction this weekend and the hen hasn't laid an egg. She appears to be older than the ones I have now which are about 8 months and their first fertile eggs are hatching right now. I have the pair in quarenteen anyway but she hasn't laid any eggs. The pen they are in is a bit on the dark side because it's closed up for the winter. Should I provide light. It's warm enough in there. My grandson was in there catching the 2 month olds this weekend and had to take his coat off because he was sweating.
