Silkie thread!

Hi fellow silkie lovers.

I posted on the black silkie thread but haven't gotten any replies so I decided to post here.

I have some what I think are black silkie roosters that have the greenish sheen in their tails. Can blues have this sheen ? I don't think so but before I breed them I would like to know.

What about black hens, they wouldn't get the sheen at all right ?

Thanks in advance !!

black roosters can have the beetle green tail feathers (the feathers are actually beetle green, not just a sheen from light play) they can also have the sheen to them. Hens can have the sheen as well.

Blue birds are not supposed to have the sheen or actual beetle green feathering. Though I have seen blues with the green tails, you don't want it.

Thats good to know about the blue's. Good thing I picked one without the green.

My older black hen doesn't have the green sheen but her daughter does. And it can only be seen in the light as you speak of.

So...still on the subject of the green. Is there any color silkie it is ok to have? It's always good to know what to look for when picking out birds for breeding. I may not be a silkie expert but i'm trying to learn. So educate me, please.

Ok, sooooo if my roosters have the sheen does not guarantee that they are in fact black. They could be blue ??

I was hoping the answer would be that only blacks would show the sheen !! Guess the only way to find out is to breed them with what I think are black hens !!
