I have a ladder/ramp for mine to get up on the roost. They all use it. It's a 2 x 6 with little pieces of wood nailed to it for rungs. Their nest boxes are on the floor. They won't get in any that are any higher for some reason. At least mine wont.

artsyrobin - my daughter things my obsession with chickens is stupid. She says they are for food not pets. But when she comes out with somebody different she always has to show them off as if she is really interested. She owns a python for a pet.

I'll take chickens anyday over a snake especially one that can squeeze the life out of my grandbabies. Alot of people don't understand chikens. They hear the word chicken and they think either breakfast or supper not pets. Thats why we're all here. We think alike.

Firstly, thanks everyone for ideas about the waterers and all. I like hearing everyone's experiences. We won't be adding any electric outside, so we'll have to use the 'old fashion' way of maintaining the flocks.

Have you tried the tennis ball trick? You can put a tennis ball in the water bowl. The polystyrene in the tennis ball doesn't freeze and helps maintain the water.

I've never heard that before! I must try it! Thank you!

I don't understand what the tennis ball does. How does it keep the water from freezing?
