Good grief why can't I hit the quote button? I was replying to the no takers on CL/ free-range roos post.

Oh, I wasn't knocking you for free ranging!! NO way!Sounds like those little guys are probably pretty darned happy to have the run of the place. I was just curious, is all. So many of the people i know just have much safer areas they live in. I think because of the open prairie out here, I just have a bad set up for free range. I use a lot of chicken wire for day time and everyone is locked up at night. I have chain link fencing for my main coop. I sure wish I could let everyone have the run of the yard and not have to worry about my neighbors dogs. (hate their dogs!) They are a 1/4 mile down and they come "hunt" over here almost daily. Dog=0 ... I'm pretty careful with my birds, they haven't gotten anything.
We live in an area of small ranches and the cattle men don't put up with loose dogs as their livelihood depends on protecting there calves. People are pretty good about keeping predator dogs confined but it doesn't take much a slip to be deadly.
I just canded a few eggs that have been under my broodie for 4 days. I don't think they are fertile. I've only seen my roo on board in the correct position one time so I'm thinking he still doesn't have it figured out yet.I've thought about, trust me! Our neighbor has cattle and he brings up his cows that are calving into his back pasture near his house so they aren't coyote bait out on the larger pasture. Those dogs I were talking about go over there and mess with his babies. He's threatened to shoot the dogs, but he still hasn't. I'm sort of waiting for someone else to do it. But if I get sick of them messing with my stuff, I'm going to target practice off my back deck when they come up into my back pasture. I just have the laid back approach and hope someone will beat me to it.
BTW- I noticed today for the FIRST time that my cockerel had figured out to jump on! I have 4 eggs in my incubator now to check for fertility, but so far nothing.(they've been in 4 days--going to give them some more time to be sure) I'll try again in a few more days with new eggs.
That's a gorgeous girl you have! I would think you could get some blue partridge but not sure what else. Hopefully you'll get some expert advice.
